She often draws and photographs this material, mainly in close focus and this becomes a reference for future works. Tall cylindrical vessels, jugs, teapots and sculptural compositions form the basis of her work.

Her work is collected nationally and internationally, and features in national and international publications.

Description

Painting is as much a part of my life as eating or resting. Even though I have intention when I begin a new piece, I allow the painting to have a say. There is a great deal of problem solving that goes on but challenge brings growth, satisfaction and endless inspiration and hopefully a positive emotional response from the viewer.

I run group workshops in pastel, acrylic and oils at my studio gallery, as well as for art societies throughout Australia.

Cate Edwards

Pick me! Pick me!’ my all knowing newborn self, shouted to the wand wielding fairies, when they were giving out gifts.

Description

For, after securing my loving father and my adventurous mother, my gift: to enjoy to make pictures and to frolic around with colour and shapes. Doing so, brings me much satisfaction and joy.

I graduated from Sydney’s City Art Institute, with a BA in 1984. Since then I've been working as an artist, illustrator and teacher, mostly using water colour and ink on paper and acrylic on canvas.

I like to start with a theme or an idea and then see where it takes me. It is always a surprise to see what happens when I get out of my own way.

Description

The main theme of my work has been based on “family” – the lives lived and being lived, portraits of my current family and tributes to past generations. This is a challenge which provides a continuous source of inspiration to me.

I have also been working with home made recycled paper mache and canvas, into book form, my imagination being ignited by a family of grubs under a piece of Jarrah bark . “The Grubs Dairy” showing like us, the rhythm of their lives and the marks they make.

Douglas Kirsop

Description

Landscape is my source of inspiration and research, painting plein air in gouache and watercolours, and oils in the studio.

Light and abstract qualities are elements I particularly enjoy while painting.

My work represents the disciplines of watercolours gouaches and oils, past and more recent, large and small which make up an overview of how I go about painting, with work from Europe which contrasts with my main subject of Australian landscape.

Directions:

From Gunyulgup Galleries and Little Fish Restaurant on Koorabin Drive, go up Nukklgup Loop for approx. 1km then turn left into Corymbia Close. Go approx. 300m to the end turn-around and park on the street, without blocking driveways.

Description

My interest in watercolour painting began early in my life, when a primary school teacher showed me how the colours flowing together created beautiful effects. It wasn’t until the 1980s that I began to take painting more seriously, first watercolour and then acrylics.

Helen Waterhouse

From the moment I began my learning journey with John Garde, I knew I had found a means to fulfil this longing.

Now five years on, this is coming into fruition, encompassing as well, greater exploration in vivid colours and forms.

This year has been a time of exploration into my personal lineage. I have seen for the first time, photos of my grandparents and great grandmother, all of whom did not survive the holocaust. This has put me in touch with the longing to recreate the world of grace and beauty that existed before this time of great destruction.

Ian Mutch

Using a combination of aerosol, acrylics and inks, I merge energetic layers featuring fragments of landscapes, nature and character illustrations. My artwork can be viewed on two levels – enjoyed from a distance and in detail close-up.

With a multimedia approach incorporating painting, installation and photography I create layers that explore these aesthetic qualities and reveal them in abstraction.

I paint initially on acetate or Perspex, I then create an installation in a selected environment which I then photograph and video, subsequently printing onto a variety of materials. My inspiration is drawn from both natural and urban environments and is strongly influenced by topical issues.

Karen Martin

“I like being out in the environment, and I like to record what is here…because we’re losing it.” Many of the tiny flowers are rare or endangered, surviving in small pockets of bush in quite obscure locations. Back in the studio, Leonie reworks the images, creating photographic montages, enhanced with her own colour language, arriving at a series of bold graphic designs. The results of this work are now available printed on rag papers and fabrics. Leonie’s home wares include cushions and drink coasters, alongside textile bags and unique clothing in the form of skirts, scarves, tops and jackets. Bringing another dimension to her arts practice, are the one-off hand-made journals…intricate images of wildflowers and orchids are cleverly scattered through the pages of parchment, drawing and writing papers.

I will often then magnify these images down to the small stones, grains of sand, pools of water or droplets that make up these large vistas. Or in turn, I may paint an envelope sized piece of land as if it were an expansive landscape. It is the lines, colour and textures that are repeated everywhere, big...and small.
