Description

Located on the Great Ocean Road, just a few km before you reach Lorne, Cathedral Rocks is a world-class surf spot that features fast, down-the-line type waves with hollow sections.

The wave quality is world-class, making it suitable for experienced surfers. The wave type is reef-rocky, with a right direction and a sandy bottom with rocks. The waves are powerful, hollow, and fast, with a normal wave length of 50 to 150m.

The best conditions for surfing at Cathedral Rocks are when the swell direction is from the Southwest or South, and the wind direction is from the Northwest or West. The swell size starts working at less than 1m / 3ft and can hold up to 3m+ / 10ft+. The best tide position is low and mid-tide, with the best tide movement being a rising tide.

Cathedral Rocks is primarily a winter surf spot, requiring a solid swell to work. It picks up less swell than the waves in the Torquay-Bells region.

To get to Cathedral Rocks, you can park your car along the Great Ocean Road and check out the surf without getting out of it. For an easier paddle out, you can use the channel to the west of the peak and paddle around the back of the line-up.

It is important to mention that Cathedral Rocks is known for being a very competitive place to surf, similar to what you would expect at Winkipop. Therefore, it is recommended to only surf here if your ability matches that of the wave. Additionally, as a responsible tourist, it is important to check ahead
