Description

With the flow of jazz, the soul of blues, the energy of electro and the power of funk, Ice Land: A Hip h’Opera uses the language of hip hop to tackle a tough issue currently affecting our society – the plague of methamphetamine use.

Meth has torn apart many areas of our community without prejudice towards gender, age, race, class, income status or religion. Yirra Yaakin has gathered powerful testimonials from users, carers, family members and many others to piece together a full-length contemporary theatre performance using hip hop as the key musical and philosophical drive. Join us as we explore the journey of Ice addiction in all its states, including happiness, invincibility and clarity, through to despair, fear, psychosis and, ultimately, the breakdown of our communities – their ruin.

Alongside a team that boasts some of Western Australia’s best artists, including Australian hip hop kings Downsyde, WA hip hop queen Layla, multi-disciplinary performer, musician and singer Moana Mayatrix of MOANA, and solo hip hop maestro TROOTH, we explore a very timely subject and ultimately ask the question: if meth use continues to escalate within our communities, what is going to happen to our society as a whole?

This production contains coarse language, drug references and adult themes. It is recommended for patrons aged 16+.

James's output in recent years has been prolific, his most recent long player, 2012's critically acclaimed album 'Thirteen'. Music critic Ed Nimmervoll, in reviewing the album said, "He's a better singer today than ever, better songwriter, better lyricist. Every track on Thirteen tells you how important all three of those aspects of his craft are to him."

His songs have provided the soundtrack to endless Australian summers, including "The Boys Light Up", "Reckless", "Beautiful People", "Lakeside", "Daughters Of The Northern Coast", "Fall Of Rome", "Hammerhead", "Motor's Too Fast" and "Slave".

Now, following countless requests at live shows and online, James is ready to explore this material further, and will feature songs selected from throughout his career - over twenty albums representing an extensive catalogue, spurning 19 Top 40 hits (seven with Australian Crawl, 12 solo) and 10 Top 10 albums.

Recognised for his extensive charitable undertakings, Reyne received an Order Of Australia in January. His iconic song 'Reckless' has featured heavily in several end of year lists including Triple M's Essential 2007 countdown. With the recent re-release of the Australian Crawl catalogue on itunes and the bands top 5 ARIA Album 'The Greatest Hits' The man behind the band that epitomized the sound of the 80's is ready to light up stages across Australia.

Reyne said today, "Whilst I'm not inclined to get all nostalgic, it feels like the right time to go through this material and present it songbook style. The songs we've chosen are a lot of fun to perform - and it scratches my never-ending itch to tour, to play live!"

Description

Johnny O'Keefe was the pioneer of rebellious Australian rock and roll, predecessor to the likes of Bon Scott, Jimmy Barnes, and Michael Hutchence that succeeded him.  Often labelled as Australia's Elvis, his explosive live shows left a mark on the best of the best in global rock royalty including Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison.

Having debuted his show to a sold-out season at the 2018 Adelaide Cabaret Festival and two sell-out shows at Palms At Crown Melbourne (for which he attracted a standing ovation each night), Johnny's real wild nephew – the multi-talented Andrew O'Keefe – delivered an extraordinary performance in Andrew O'Keefe “Shouts” Johnny O'Keefe.  Highly applauded by the critics for his song interpretation and his storytelling, Andrew intertwines his own experiences with legendary stories of The Wild One, and takes audiences on a very personal journey through JOK's twenty-five year career, belting out classics like 'Wild One' ,'Sing Sing Sing' and 'Shout' with an intensity topped only by Johnny himself.

From October 2019, Andrew turns his attention to the rest of Australia! Hit after hit, O'Keefe will deliver a captivating, mesmerising and thoroughly entertaining journey in to the life and the stories of Johnny O'Keefe as he channels his Uncle from above.

Having started out in show business through musical theatre, Andrew O'Keefe is well versed in entertaining his audience. A star of Australian television, along with his many other talents, Andrew is a classically trained singer (A MusA). In 2013, he entertained audiences nationally when he took to the stage playing the role of King Herod in the Australian tour of the Jesus Christ Superstar Arena Spectacular. Andrew again graced the stage in March 2015 in Harvest Rain's Pirates of Penzance production held at QPAC, in a much-acclaimed turn as the swashbuckling Pirate King. In 2017, he toured a sell-out season of Gilbert and Sullivan Forever! – a wild cabaret romp through the much-loved G&S repertoire.

Andrew O'Keefe "Shouts" Johnny O'Keefe is an intensely inspirational representation of Johnny that Andrew delivers via the hits and his own words. His narrative, which includes personal family insights, gives Australia a never before heard or seen glimpse of what it was like to grow up with the king.
