Bushtucker River and Winery Tours are owned and guided by Helen Lee, a West Australian with an education in anthropology and botany and teaching.

  • Tour Price:$40 - $90
  • Type:Tours

Details

  • Tour Locations:Margaret River

Description

In 1990, Helen Lee opened her Bushtucker Canoe Tour on the Margaret River, and guided every tour 360 days of the year, for the next 6 years. Having a passion for Aboriginal and natural history, Helen discovered medicinal plants native to the river and coast. Using these plants and natural bush foods, Helen concocted 25 interesting gourmet foods for the traveller to experience. The river and cliffs provide a natural adventure path as travellers follow Helen and her specialist guides through wildflowers, crystal waters in the huge wallcliffe! Aboriginal heritage and  forested islands reveal unique Australian flora and fauna. The pioneer hardships and native foods, plus Aboriginal bush remedies are demonstrated against the backdrop of magnificent Wallcliffe House, 1828-1862. The story of how the river formed 60,000 years ago unfolds as the traveller enjoys food collection, medicine use and a gourmet picnic prepared from all Helen’s collected “Bushtuckers”. Between each river site  and the gourmet picnic, travellers canoe in 2-5 seater eco canoes, stable and silent, in the pristine forest surrounding Margaret River! Swimming is a must,October to May each year!

Helen and her guides’ story telling ability and their passion for the environment bring to life the cultural world of Aboriginal and outdoor Australian life. The tour is fine for active and inactive visitors. Awards in 1996 for excellence in heritage and cultural tourism, and again in 1999 and 2002 have provided strong motivation for Helen to maintain quality, informed and professional tour guiding on the beautiful Margaret River.

Description

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours specialise in offering tours and services centred around the Cape to Cape Track. We are locally based with highly qualified guides with a wealth of knowledge and experience in interpreting the track, local environment and culture.

Each year we offer a number of fully guided ‘end to end’ walks, staying in well appointed accommodation and enjoying high quality food and service. We specialise in interpreting the Track’s geology, flora and fauna, culture, coastal and marine features so that participants leave with a deep understanding of the area. We are also able to assist groups organise their own trips with our guides, meals, accommodation and planning.

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours have assisted large corporate groups to experience the Track by offering leadership and teambuilding exercises designed to bring out the best in team members. In 2011 the team facilitated several three day expeditions for 50 emergency response personnel from one of Australia’s leading mining companies. The team members crossed rivers at midnight, performed vertical cliff rescues, built bridges and catapults, cut crash victims out of vehicles with the jaws of life and walked and kayaked 32kms on their final day to finally reach Cape Naturaliste.

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours supports self guided walkers and groups who are attempting the Track, assisting with logistics and planning, organising accommodation and meals, a hiking hire gear service, a track transfer service and safety tracking service using satellite technology.

The team also provides educational tours, support and planning for a number of school groups to use the Cape to Cape Track to expose the students to outdoor and environmental education.

What’s your favourite stretch of the Cape to Cape, and why?

Redgate Beach to Contos Cliff – It is a seven kilometre stretch and takes about two and a half hours if you are cruising. We love the diversity of terrain, the beach, the granite headlands, the limestone cliffs, the towering caves, the sensational lookouts and the winding hidden coastal track.

We love this stretch of the track so much we adopted the stretch from Bob’s Hollow to Conto’s Cliff. As an adoptee we are responsible for pruning the track, making sure the Track markers are in place and that there is not rubbish around.

Which parts of the track would you recommend for families, or those of a lower fitness level?

There are some fantastic short walks suitable for those of a lower fitness level and even those in a wheelchair.

The first three kilometres of the Track from Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock is ‘access for all’ and features quality wooden boardwalks and bitumen pathways. Some final touches are underway as part of an upgrade for the recreation area at Sugarloaf Rock. The walk here features outstanding vistas of Sugarloaf Rock and the ‘Windmills’ surfbreak, stunning wildflowers and is great for spotting migrating humpback whales in the springtime.

Smith’s Beach to Mitchell Rocks is another favourite section of the Track due to its high vantage points and amazing topography. This path heads up and over the granite gneiss bedrock and then up again over the limestone ridge at Rotary Lookout. Although short, at about 5kms, this stretch does have steep and rocky sections, great for young families with adventurous kids. Contact Cape to Cape Explorer Tours to experience this journey with an enthusiastic guide, fantastic morning tea and a few hidden surprises!

How about for people seeking a longer, more challenging journey?

For a longer, more challenging journey and the true Cape to Cape Track experience you can’t go past the ‘end to ender’. It does not matter if you begin at the northern end at Cape Naturaliste, or the southern end at Cape Leeuwin, the 135km coastal track is enough to challenge the most experienced hiker. The main challenges encountered include frequent sandy beach sections, rocky uneven climbs and compounding fatigue. Some prefer to carry all their gear and camp out on the track, while others prefer a guided tour where they to stay in ‘off track’ accommodation, ranging from caravan parks right up to five star luxury retreats.

Time taken to complete the entire walk ranges from five days (averaging 27kms a day) up to ten days (average of 13.5kms a day), depending upon group fitness, ability and desire to experience swimming in the pools and other delightful distractions!
Highlights from Cape to Cape Explorer Tours latest guided end to ender in October, straight from the participants themselves, included the flowers (amazing), the food (wow!), the physical challenge, the mental challenge, personal insights and group bonding, the breathtaking scenery, the level of guide local knowledge and quality interpretation. It truly is a fantastic experience and a real challenge.

For corporate or team groups we offer a two to seven day ‘Cape to Cape Challenge’, incorporating some of the best parts of the track, fully catered wilderness style camping, rock climbing, abseiling, sea kayaking and extra activities to suit the group including team building, leadership and planning activities along the way.

What are the best campsites along the track?

As far as wilderness campsite go that are away from roads and facilities my favourite campsite is Moses Rock South. It is situated high on a hillside and has great views south, yet totally sheltered because it is nestled into the coastal tee tree. When camping here you see no signs of humanity and you can’t hear any cars, total bliss!

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours is running a two day highlight tour in 2012 that features a night of luxury staying in the national park, camping with all the comforts and no packing, not to be missed!

Are there any good places to swim?

There are some stunning stretches of the coastline perfect for a swim depending on the swell, tide and wind. Options include Yallingup Lagoon, southern end of Smith’s Beach, Main Beach at Gracetown, Kilcarnup snorkelling in the mermaid holes, Prevelly for a swim and icecream at Gnarabup, Hamelin Bay, Cosy Corner, Deep Dene and a victorious dip at Quarry Bay near the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. There is a plethora of other secret swimming holes that are only suitable in certain conditions… let our guides show you them all.

Caveworks

Vast delicate chambers, shoal and stalactite formations and crystals await you beneath your feet in an underground world of natural beauty. And aboveground, the educational experience will compliment the awe you'll feel down below.

Climbing at Bob’s Hollow

15km south of the town of Margaret River is a little corner of paradise called Bob's Hollow, one of WA’s best sport climbing crags, offering steep limestone walls and more than 20 established routes.

  • Activity:Abseiling,Climbing
  • Type:Sites & Trails

Details

  • Open Days:Sunday,Public Holidays,School holidays,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday

Description

Bob’s is famous for steep limestone walls, strange stalactite formations and white sandy beaches. Mostly climbs of 15-20m. Reach the top and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding bushland. It is not a sea cliff though; the crag is around 100m inland from the beach.

The crag is a beautiful limestone cliff with vertical to steep overhanging walls. The limestone is generally very solid, although it has only a hard outer crust. Some parts of the cliff, such as the large open cave in the southern section of the crag, show the soft sandy material that lies behind the crust. Be warned that limestone caves and overhangs are potentially dangerous – there have been instances of limestone caves collapsing along the coast.

Almost all climbs are equipped with glue-in bolts and lower-off anchors so you can leave the rack at home: all you’ll be needing is a set of draws, although, a few climbs require bolts plates so check the route descriptions.

Bob’s Hollow can be climbed at all year round. Although it gets very hot in summer, the cliff faces east so it gets morning shade, with the northern most section being in shade until around 2pm. In other seasons, the crag can be climbed at all day, even if there is light rain although high humidity will make all the holds very greasy.

WARNING

The Bob’s Hollow crag is situated in the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Nation Park and is managed by WA’s Conservation and Land Management (CALM) body. The CALM management plan for the park states that climbing is not permitted on any limestone cliffs within the national park. Therefore, you climb at Bob’s Hollow at your own risk. Camping is not permitted here – at the car park or in the cave. CALM will fine you if they catch you.

ACCESS

There are a number of options for getting to Bob’s Hollow. If you have a 4WD you can drive to the crag via a rocky track. From Margaret River, travel south along Caves Rd. Approximately 2.5 km south of the Redgate Rd intersection, turn right (west) onto an unsealed track (Bob’s Hollow Rd), which is opposite the Calgardup Cave car park. The drive to the crag along the track takes around 15 min. The track is pretty rough with some tricky rocky sections to negotiate and thick scrub close to the track on either side just waiting to put scratches in your paintwork. A 4WD with decent clearance and low range is required here – no Subaru’s or Honda’s unless you’re happy to collect a few dents and potentially more serious damage on the under-body. At the car park, walk down the gully to the north and follow the base of the cliff, past the cave, for around 200m to the first routes (Northern End).

If you don’t have a 4WD or don’t want to risk any damage, you’re going to have to walk around 45 mins. You can walk along the 4WD track however it is much nicer to walk in along Conto’s Beach from the south. Follow Caves Rd past the 4WD track entrance and turn right at the Lake Cave entrance. After several hundred metres turn left into Conto Rd and continue for approximately 4 km before turning right at the Conto Spring Beach sign. Proceed to car park. From the car park walk north along the beach for about 45 minutes to Bob’s Hollow. You will walk past Split Rock, a rocky point and from there you will have a further 300m before you see the Bob’s Hollow cliffs a couple of hundred metres inland. There are several tracks into Bob’s from the beach.

Description

It was during a long coastal hike, along the famous Cape to Cape track, immersed in scented Boronias and Honey Myrtle, surrounded by swishing Peppermint Eucalyptuses and low lying prickly Acacias (names I did not know then) that I came to realise two things.

First, I realised that in spite of loving being out in nature I knew very little about the natural world that surrounded me. When I looked at trees I saw, well, trees; when I looked at flowers, I saw colours, red ones, purple ones, yellow ones.

I wondered if other people also felt the same. Whether they were also yearning for a more profound connection and understanding of the natural world, yearning to move like Edgewalkers, effectively across the edge between the structured and the untamed, between the sophisticated and the primal.

Second, I realised that walking, but especially in nature, was, and is, an integral part of my creative process…that I have been doing it for a long time.

I realised that I hiked the mountains around Almaty, Kazakhstan trying to find a way to finish the first draft of my first novel in 1999, and that I regularly traversed King’s Park, Perth, while solving production issues with my first play Trollop(e) in 2002. I understood that I had walked my way out of every single challenge in all the theatre-based projects I created with Act Out www.actout.com.au from 2007 – 2014 and that I am still bushwalking now as a way to solve problems, to let my mind expand and my imagination soar.

I understood, that day on the Cape to Cape with the Southern Native Roses dangling red above the limestone outcrops of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, with Western Spinebills fluttering among the Melaleuca and the Cockies’ Tongues, that walking is how I negotiate the edge between the world of what is and the world of what is yet to be; between the world of the created and what is yet to be created. I wondered whether others also felt a desire to move more freely between these two realms.
