About Treasury Gardens
Treasury Gardens is a things to do venue in East Melbourne, Victoria.
They are bordered by Wellington Parade, Spring Street, Treasury Place, and the Fitzroy Gardens across Lansdowne street to the west. The Gardens are part of a network of city gardens, including Fitzroy Gardens, Carlton Gardens, Flagstaff Gardens, and Kings Domain.
The Gardens provide an ideal landscaped respite for office workers during lunch breaks, affording large areas of lawn and walking paths lined with mature trees. Given their prime location in the city, they serve as a launching or concluding point for political rallies, demonstrations, and festivals.
The Victorian Heritage Register recognizes the Gardens for their historical, archaeological, social, and horticultural importance. The Gardens feature mature tree species such as Moreton Bay figs, deodar cedars, English elms, white poplars, Port Jackson figs, and many more.
The park’s lush vegetation is home to various animals, including common brushtail possums, grey-headed flying foxes, insect-eating bats, Pacific black ducks, red wattle birds, and silver gulls. Treasury Gardens houses three remarkable memorials built to commemorate famous figures: the Sir William John Clarke Memorial, the Robert Burns Memorial, and the President John F.
Kennedy Memorial. The area of the Treasury Gardens was free open space in the 1850s after failure to sell allotments due to the marshy nature of the land.
In 1867, the Gardens were designed by Clement Hodgkinson. In 1902, William Guilfoyle transformed the ornamental pond into a Japanese Garden.
