About Spit Bridge
Spit Bridge is a things to do venue in Mosman, New South Wales.
It is made of steel and concrete and carries The Spit Road (A8) across the Middle Harbour, connecting the suburbs of Mosman and Seaforth. Originally, the Lower North Shore and Northern Beaches of Sydney were serviced by a rowing boat, but a hand-operated punt service began in 1850.
Plans for a bridge were made in the 1870s, but the State Government was skeptical due to the planned construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. After World War I, more calls were made for a bridge, and in 1923, the Council decided to build a low height design made from timber.
The current Spit Bridge was constructed by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company, starting in 1952 and completed in 1958. It has seven spans, four traffic lanes, and a pedestrian walkway.
The opening span is a single-leaf bascule. The approaches and abutments at each end vary due to the topography.
On November 24, 2003, The Spit Bridge was listed on the Roads & Traffic Authority heritage and conservation register. Traffic across the bridge is regulated by traffic lights and roadway gates.
The tunnel will connect the Warringah Freeway from Cammeray and cross underneath Middle Harbour. In conclusion, the Spit Bridge is an important transportation route and a must-visit attraction in Sydney.
