In times of floods, the region transforms into a vast inland sea that lasts for several days at a time. The name Porcupine Lookout dates back to the early days.

According to the Aboriginals of the Kamilaroi Tribe, the hill was known as ‘Bindea,’ meaning ‘the place where shrubs with leaves like a porcupine quill grow.’ So, the name ‘Porcupine Lookout’ is a tribute to the land’s pre-colonial heritage. Porcupine Lookout is accessible to visitors throughout the year.

Porcupine Lookout is quite accessible by car. The best way to reach this picturesque spot is via Apex Road, which is just two kilometers from the Gunnedah town centre.
