The site is named after the family of Maori wrasse that live there. Situated between 14 to 18 metres beneath the surface, the site offers exploration opportunities for divers.

The reef wall and arches near the bommie are a popular sight, where reef sharks can often be seen. The Spiders Ledge, just north of the wall, is known for its decorated outcrop with shells.

Divers can also spot barramundi cod and clown triggerfish among the coral. The Maori Wrasse Bommie Dive Site can be visited year-round, but the best time to explore is from June to October when the ocean visibility is optimal.
