About Kershaw Gardens
Kershaw Gardens is a things to do venue in Rockhampton, Queensland.
It was once an old landfill site before being transformed into a lush garden in 1988. The Gardens feature nature walks with a variety of native flora, a man-made waterfall, and various facilities such as a slab hut, dog training area, and a recreational area with picnic shelters, a sensory garden, and a children’s playground.
In 2014, the High Street entrance of Kershaw Gardens became a free camping area for self-sufficient travelers with recreational vehicles. This decision faced opposition from commercial caravan park operators who were concerned about its impact on their businesses.
Despite the opposition, Rockhampton Regional Council supported the establishment of the free camping area, arguing that it would encourage travelers to stop and rest in the city. In November 2018, the Planning and Environment Court ruled against the council, ordering the abolition of the free camping area by February 2019.
Fortunately, there have been no previous incidents recorded at Kershaw Gardens.
