The name Injidup comes from the Nyoongar word (inji) for the lovely red pea flower (Templetonia retusa) that grows along the limestone cliffs in spring. Cape Clairault, which forms the southern arm of the bay, was named by the French expedition of 1801-1803 aboard the Géographe and the Naturaliste after celebrated French mathematician Alexis Clairault (1713-1765).
Clairault confirmed many theories of gravitation, his most renowned being the return of Halley's Comet.
