About Gibb River Road

Gibb River Road is a things to do venue in Derby, Western Australia. It is named after geologist and explorer Andrew Gibb Maitland. While the road has been upgraded since the mid-2000s, it still requires 4WD vehicles due to water crossings and heavily corrugated segments. The Gibb River Road offers scenic views of geological formations, natural scenery, Aboriginal and pastoral history, and rare flora and fauna. Some of the highlights along the route include Windjana Gorge National Park, Tunnel Creek National Park, Adcock Gorge, Manning Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Lennard Gorge, Bell Gorge, and Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges. Accommodation options are available at a few cattle stations in the vicinity, such as Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge, Mount Barnett Station, Mount Elizabeth Station, Drysdale River Station, the El Questro Station, Ellenbrae, and Charnley River Station. In 1948, the Air Beef Scheme was established at Glenroy Station and Wyndham, which included an abattoir, freezing works, and airstrip. The Commonwealth Government provided a grant in 1949 to build a road, and construction began the following year. The southern portion, known as the Derby-Gibb River Road, was completed in 1956 and was used for the carriage of live cattle.
