Christchurch Transitional Cathedral is a things to do venue in Christchurch Central City, South Island.

Designed by award-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the cathedral was built as a temporary replacement for the original ChristChurch Cathedral, which was severely damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The Cardboard Cathedral is the largest “emergency structure” designed by Ban and can seat up to 700 people.

The cathedral is made of cardboard tubes, timber, and steel, and features a triangular design that is both striking and functional. The triangular shape allows for natural light to flood the space, creating a bright and uplifting atmosphere.

The walls are made of polycarbonate, which provides a translucent effect and allows for the play of light and shadow within the space. Visitors are welcome to drop in and see the building, and guided tours are available in multiple languages.
