Buccaneer Archipelago is a things to do venue in Derby, Western Australia.

Named after the famous buccaneer William Dampier, the archipelago covers over 50 square kilometers and consists of approximately 800 islands. Situated between King Sound and Collier Bay near Yampi Sound, the region offers breathtaking landscapes and is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility.

The area has a rich history, with Aboriginal Australians inhabiting the region for thousands of years. The Mayala group, including the Yawijibaya and Unggarranggu peoples, are the traditional owners of the archipelago, while the Bardi people have fishing and trochus rights.

The islands themselves are composed of ancient Precambrian sandstones and were formed relatively recently due to rising sea levels. The islands of the Buccaneer Archipelago are characterized by their rocky terrain and high cliffs, some of which were formed over 2 billion years ago.

The surrounding coastline and islands remain pristine due to their isolated location, providing easy access to clear waters and various water sports activities. Some islands are home to rainforests and mangroves, offering a diverse range of natural landscapes.

A new marine park, the Mayala Marine Park, is currently being proposed for the region. Co-designed by traditional owners and the state government’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the park is part of the government’s “Plan for Our Parks” initiative.
