Being near the ancient Maori settlement of Omaui and as the oldest European settled community in New Zealand, Bluff’s history illustrates the blending of two cultures and the shared community spirit, with the sea remaining as the central focus for many locals. The museum contains a wide variety of maritime displays, artifacts, miniature models, boats, photographs, and a working triple expansion engine.

The biggest attraction is the full-sized oystering boat, the Monica, kindly donated by the Jones family. Visitors can climb aboard and explore the entire ship.

The museum also exhibits artwork showing scenes of Bluff’s early days when it was officially known as Campbelltown. Fascinating displays include whaling, oystering, shipwrecks, a working steam engine, historic maps and artworks, and a full-sized oystering boat.

It also delves into the history of Bluff, one of the oldest European settled communities in New Zealand, with early maps and historic artworks. With a continuously growing collection of exhibits and artifacts, there is always something new to see when you visit the Maritime Museum.

The museum is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily, and admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they are always happy to answer any questions you may have.
