Black Mountain is a things to do venue in Acton, ACT.

It is situated west of the Canberra central business district and on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin. Black Mountain is surrounded by Canberra Nature Park and is predominantly covered in native bushland.

The mountain serves as a natural boundary for Canberra city. At the eastern base of Black Mountain lies the Australian National Botanic Gardens, while the CSIRO and Australian National University are situated next to the western base.

One of the key landmarks on the mountain is Black Mountain Tower, a broadcasting tower that rises 195 meters above the summit. The bulk of Black Mountain is composed of white quartz Black Mountain Sandstone, which was deposited in the late Early Silurian age.

Exposures of State Circle Shale can be found on the southeast slopes and northwest of the mountain. Mudstone can be found in the north, and greywacke from the Ordovician age Pittman Formation is found on the Black Mountain Peninsula.

Black Mountain was originally named Black Hill, along with nearby Red Hill. The mountain range was referred to as the Canberry Ranges by early European settlers.

Visitors to Black Mountain can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding natural scenery and engage in activities such as hiking or cycling on the mountain’s trails.
