The park encompasses the forest-covered Baw-Baw Plateau and surrounds the popular Mount Baw Baw Alpine Resort. It has a rich cultural, historical, and natural significance with stunning landscape features, unique flora and fauna, and diverse recreational opportunities.

Baw Baw National Park is situated on the traditional land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, with the Gunaikurnai people also considering it their traditional country. The area was first explored by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in 1860, and settlement began in 1880 after the discovery of gold.

It was declared a national park in April 1979 and added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2008. The park has a unique sub-alpine ecosystem and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.

It is characterized by low-lying grasses, heathlands, and snow gums. Notably, it is one of the few places in the world where you can see Leadbeater’s possums, which are highly endangered.

The critically endangered Baw Baw frog, listed on the IUCN Red List, is also native to the region. The deciduous Baw Baw berry can be found on the plateau.

Baw Baw National Park gets its name from the nearby Mount Baw Baw. In the Woiwurrung language, the name for the mountain was thought to translate to “ghost” or “bandicoot.” In Bunurong’s language, it was thought
