In 1955, road works near Canowindra uncovered a large slab of rock with unusual indentations, which was later placed on the roadside during road works. A local beekeeper later found this slab and contacted the Australian Museum, believing it contained fossils.
In 1993, paleontologist Dr. Alex Ritchie a dig at the site of the first fossil finds.
This excavation resulted in the removal of 70 tonnes of rock slabs and revealed more than 3,000 Devonian fish fossils. The archaeological site has led to several new discoveries and tells the story of events that happened more than 360 million years ago.
