Description

The Glenelg River Casterton is located in Casterton, Victoria, where it joins with the Wannon River.

The river played a significant role in the area's early settlement and is primarily used for sheep production. Access to the river is available from the Portland-Nelson Road or via Dartmoor.

Lower Glenelg National Park covers an area of 27,300 hectares and features the Glenelg River, which has formed a spectacular gorge through limestone. Boat trips are organized to visit the Princess Margaret Rose Cave, and the park offers activities such as canoeing, fishing, and bushwalking. Camping grounds and cabins are available at the Princess Margaret Rose Cave, and camping is permitted beside the Glenelg River. The park's geological characteristics were formed millions of years ago, and it is also significant to Aboriginal heritage.

The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including Platypus, kangaroos, possums, and gliders. There are around 700 plant species in the park, including orchids. Visitors should obtain permits for camping and follow regulations such as not lighting fires outside designated areas. Precautions should be taken due to the high bushfire risk and deep water in the river. Nearby parks include Cape Nelson State Park, Discovery Bay Coastal Park, Mount Eccles National Park, and Mount Richmond National Park.
