The South Burnett wine region in Queensland, Australia, situated about a three-hour drive northwest of Brisbane, is one of the two recognized wine-growing areas in the state, alongside the Granite Belt. Spanning from Goomeri to Nanango, it covers the space between the Great Dividing Range and the coast, characterized by a sub-tropical climate, making it one of the world's hottest viticultural regions. Despite recent drought challenges, the area has carved out a significant presence in the Australian wine sector.
With roots tracing back to the early 1900s when German settlers introduced the first vines, the South Burnett wine industry saw its initial commercial crush with a one-tonne batch of Cabernet Sauvignon at Crane Wines near Kingaroy. Over time, the industry has expanded, culminating in the region's recognition as Queensland's inaugural official wine region in December 2000.
Featuring a diverse array of grape varieties, the South Burnett wine region focuses on both red and white wines. Main red varieties include Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, while white varieties like Verdelho, Viognier, and Semillon take center stage. Additionally, the area has witnessed a rise in Mediterranean varieties like Vermentino, Fiano, and Pinot Grigio, alongside Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Saperavi, and Nebbiolo, which have gained popularity.
Benefitting from its distinct climate, the region is conducive to producing high-quality, fruit-forward wines, particularly with cooler night temperatures and an early summer harvest season from December to February. With altitudes ranging from 169 to 1141 meters above sea level, the area offers varied growing conditions for different grape types, covering approximately 204 hectares of vineyards, with a mean January temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius and a growing season rainfall of 527 millimeters.
Among the notable wineries in the South Burnett region are Clovely Estate, renowned for its award-winning vineyards and historic family farm, and Dusty Hill Vineyard, offering picturesque views of Lake Barambah and various dining experiences amidst the vineyards.
