This site was first used for public Christian services in 1836, when Dr Alexander Thomson led the first services here. Afterward, a small wooden chapel was built nearby and the area was used as a corn market until 1848, when it was chosen as the site for the bluestone St Paul’s Parish Church.
This Church was consecrated in 1852 and used until it was demolished in 1885 to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the same spot was made due to its proximity to the railway and then-upcoming cable tramway service.
Even today, Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remain two of Melbourne’s busiest intersections, making the Cathedral a vital part of urban life.
