Barnabas Chapel for the Holy Communion service. Afterwards, we enjoy a cup of tea in the Parish Centre.
On the first Sunday of each month, the service is held at All Saints Kingston. St Barnabas Chapel has a special history, as it was the mother church of the Church of England’s missionary work in Melanesia.
Thousands of students from the Pacific Islands attended the Mission College, living and studying there from 1867 to 1920. The mission was eventually moved to the Solomon Islands in 1920.
The chapel itself is a stunning building, with a polished marble floor and a beautiful rose window. The timber work is decorated with pearl shell inlays and the ceiling is decorated with massive beams, crafted by shipbuilders.
Today, the chapel is still in use and we continue to celebrate regular services there.
