Over the years, the area saw pioneers working in gold mining and other industries. The town was originally called Shark Bay but was renamed Safety Beach in 1963 due to the suggestion of local lifesavers and council, aiming to attract more tourists to the area.

Notable people associated with Safety Beach include George Calombaris, a renowned Australian chef and restaurateur who was born in nearby Melbourne.
