In 2021, the park was renamed Gheebulum Coonungai National Park after being transferred back to the native Quandamooka People. Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including open forests of scribbly gum and pink bloodwood, coastal she-oak, mangroves, and melaleuca swamps.

Visitors to the park can enjoy activities such as bushwalking, fishing, and watersports. Whale spotting is particularly popular during late winter and spring when humpback whales can be seen in the surrounding waters.

Access to Gheebulum Kunungai (Moreton Island) National Park and Moreton Island Recreation Area is only possible by ferry. The MICAT vehicle ferry from Lytton, the Tangalooma Flyer from Pinkenba, or the Kooringal Trader from Amity Point on North Stradbroke Island are the available options.

The Combie Trader barge service from Scarborough in Redcliffe City to Bulwer is no longer in operation.
