Established in 1862, it is the city’s oldest park and is highly valued by locals and tourists alike. Managed by the City of Melbourne, the park covers 7.2 hectares of Crown Land.

The park holds significant historical importance, with its name originating from the flagstaff erected on the hill in 1840. It has witnessed notable events such as the announcement of Victoria’s Separation from the Colony of New South Wales and the burial of the colony’s first deaths.

In 1871, a memorial to Melbourne’s pioneers was erected in the park. Flagstaff Gardens offers various activities for visitors.

It features extensive lawns, mature trees, flowerbeds, and wild animals like possums. The park also has tennis courts, a children’s playground, and electric barbecues.

The north corner of the park contains a bowling lawn, rose beds, and shrub beds. The park’s architecture includes the Victorian branch of the Royal Mint, which is a well-preserved example of Victorian Gold Rush boom-period classical-styled architecture.

The former Mint building is a beautiful spectacle for visitors. The park also has memorials and sculptures that highlight the area’s social significance.

Flagstaff Gardens is recognized and protected by various organizations, including the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), the Australian Heritage Commission, and the Victorian Heritage Register. Its inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register ensures the preservation of the site’s trees, landscaping, and individual features.
