Named after Sir John Langdon Bonython, the park holds historical significance for the Kaurna people, as it was home to native locations established when the first settlers arrived in 1837. The park has been the site of various historical events since its inauguration in 1962.

The area of Bonython Park was initially settled by Europeans in 1837, with two areas named Buffalo and Coromandel. The Kaurna people established a permanent settlement called Bromley’s Camp, which served as a rations distribution point.

In 1838, the first South Australian mission was established in Pirltawardli by German missionaries. The first school was established in 1840 but was later replaced by a government-run Native School.

The remaining children were sent to Poonindie Mission in Port Lincoln. The Pirltawardli camping site is now commemorated by a plaque.
