Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Description

Sitting atop steep terraced slopes and surrounded by virgin bushland, Darlington Estate utilises environmentally friendly viticulture to ensure the integrity of the land, and in turn, the wine. Perfectly suited to functions (namely weddings), the main building is a stone, wood and glass construction that blends seamlessly into the natural environment.

The Food

Darlington's award winning restaurant is known for its attractive a la carte menu, reflecting a combination of Australian and European influences. Perfectly complemented by the estate's premium wines, each dish is designed to showcase a locally sourced produce, embellished with clever accompaniments. Description

Deep Woods Estate is one of Australia’s most highly-awarded wineries, and was awarded Australia’s most significant wine trophy, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the Deep Woods Estate 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Description

Flametree Wines catapulted into Australia’s winemaking hall of fame in 2008 when its first ever red wine, a Cabernet Merlot, won the Jimmy Watson Trophy, Australia’s most-respected national wine prize. The following year it was a finalist for the same award. Substantial critical acclaim has followed.

The Estate was established by the Towner family in 2007 and was created with a vision to become a world-recognised winery committed to producing consistent, distinctive Margaret River wines. 

The Wines
The estate specialises in Chardonnay, Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Shiraz, Rose, Sparkling and Dessert varieties. 

Wine Tasting
The exceptional wines are brought to life at its laid-back, architecturally-designed Estate. Think Hampton’s style meets relaxed Margaret River atmosphere, with a Cape Cod design building, enviable deck, open fireplace and manicured gardens.

The Cellar Door’s timber joinery, natural stone, American Walnut floors and shingle roofing create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and grandiose. Wine tastings are relaxed and unpretentious – geared solely around the pleasure of enjoying exceptional wines. Group bookings can be arranged in advance. 

The Food
Visitors can create their own custom gourmet platter of cheese, antipasto and charcuterie, from outstanding local producers like Cambray Cheese, the Venison Farm and the Margaret River Pantry. These are best enjoyed with a glass of wine, of course!

Unique Highlights
The Art Gallery hosts an annual program of exhibitions that showcase and support the local art community. Pets and children are welcome and will love the wide, spacious lawn area to play on. There is also a wheelchair accessible ramp at the front entrance.

The name House of Cards is inspired by the gamble winemakers and growers take every vintage, forced to play the hand they are dealt by Mother Nature. Owners Travis and Elizabeth Wray are personally involved in every aspect of operations, from tending the vines to making wine, bottling, marketing and sales.

The Wines
The fruit that goes into House of Cards wine all comes from a single vineyard planted in 1997 on Caves Road at the Northern end of the Margaret River Wine Region, enabling the unique terroir to be reflected in each vintage. To get the best 'hand' possible, organic and biodynamic principles are used to improve soil health and vine nutrition. The vineyard is dry grown and cropped at low levels to increase concentration of fruit flavours. The rest is up to Mother Nature.

Description

Warwick Lavis and Geoff and Karyn Cross purchased the then-named Peperilly Estate in 2003. Situated in the picturesque Ferguson Valley in the hills of Geographe wine region, the first vines were planted in 1999 on sloping hillsides; with superb red gravelly loam soils and full access to the coastal breeze of the Indian Ocean.  West Australian Peppermint Trees line the Henty Brook, the natural water source for the estate's vineyard. Winemaker Michael Ng was born in China and worked vintages in Turkey, New Zealand and St-Emillon before returning to Western Australia.

The owners are committed to producing signature, terroir-driven wines that pair well with food. Varieties include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Malbec, Grenache and Mourvedre, which are available to purchase online.

Description

La Violetta was established in 2008 by Andrew 'AJ' Hoadley, a well-travelled and respected winemaker who chose to settle in Denmark with his wife Hanna Reichel for its excellent winemaking conditions. Grapes are sourced from a handful of trusted growers from some of the oldest vineyards in the region, with a focus on small-scale production to ensure each wine is personally hand-crafted.  In 2010, La Violetta's first release, 2008 La Ciornia, featured in UK Critics Matthew Jukes' Top 100 and Sarah Ahmed's Top 5 Australian wines.

The name 'La Violetta' derives from an old Piedmontese song celebrating intoxication.

The wines are made with an array of ancient winemaking techniques learnt from different regions around the world and created in small batches to make interesting and complex wines. Varieties include Riesling, Gwurtztraminer Chardonnay and Shiraz.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

Description

Nestled among the vines on a gently winding road near the upper reaches of the Swan River lies one of the jewels of the historic Swan Valley.

Founded by Simon and Maaike Berns in 1998 and named after a small Australian bird which abounds in the nearby tree-lined Swan River, Sittella Winery is one of the newest wineries in the Swan Valley.

Sittella’s Swan Valley vineyard thrives on the fertile soils and Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and mild wet winters, producing a range of rich, full flavoured wines. Simon and Maaike Berns have been successful in producing high quality traditional wine styles using Verdelho, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Tempanillo and Petit Verdot, and now source grapes from other vineyards in the Swan Valley, their own Margaret River property and and Franklyn River in the Great Southern.  Over the past five years, production has increased dramatically with a crush of over 100 tonnes.

Maaike is responsible for the imaginative architecture of the restaurant, incorporating the essence of modern Italy into this wonderful earth-rendered winery.

The winery and Restaurant is open from 11:00am to 4:00pm Tuesdays – Sundays and public holidays.

SWAN VALLEY

The Sittella Vineyard is located on a stretch of fertile land 20 km north-east of Perth. In this upper river district, with the Darling Ranges to the east and the Indian Ocean to the west, the warm Mediterranean style climate provides steady winter rainfall and hot, dry summers which produce grapes of wonderful flavour, richness, balance and style. The water supply is a trickle system using bore water. Verdelho, Chardonnay, Shiraz, vines grow over a 5 hectare allotment on rich alluvial sandy loam soils (3 hectares under vine). Recent plantings also include Tempranillo, and Petit Verdot.

MARGARET RIVER ESTATE

Located at Willyabrup, 260 kms south west of Perth. The region’s temperate southern climate has been likened to Bordeaux with its generous winter rainfall, freedom from spring frosts and subdued summer temperatures – the ideal growing conditions for international wine styles. With 2.5 hectares of undulating land and soils are amongst the best in the area. Comprised of red brown loam with some gravel that ensures good natural drainage. Varieties include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc and more recently Malbec to develop a classic red Blend.

Description

Situated in one of the most elevated areas of the Ferguson Valley, development of the Talisman vineyard began in 1999 by Kim and Jenny Robinson. The unique site is surrounded by the Wellington National Park, with select grape varieties matched with the property's soil types and sloping landscapes. The superb quality fruit of the vineyard, which is grown under the watchful eye of Victor Bertola, is complemented by the delicate style of acclaimed winemaker Peter Stanlake. The winery was notably awarded 'Small Producer of the Year' in 2017 by the West Australian Wine Guide.

Tastings of Talisman wines take weekly at the Subiaco Farmers Market. There is currently no cellar door at the property, but watch this space.

Description

Victory Point was established in 1998 by the Berson Family, with a single-minded objective to make ultra-premium wines, like those made famous by the Margaret River pioneer estates.

They consulted with various Margaret River pioneers, particularly the Moss Wood team, for advice to select their piece of earth. The Berson’s made the brave decision not to irrigate their vineyard to emulate the example of the region’s icons. This ‘short-term pain for long term gain’ approach has resulted in a highly-acclaimed and distinct range. The vineyard is situated just south of Cowaramup, on an idyllic site with two sides of a gently sloping valley and a permanent spring fed creek running through the middle.

The family’s aim to one day relocate and live in the world-renowned wine paradise that is Margaret River, has been realised and there is now a beautiful cellar door open at the vineyard.

Victory Point maintain a singular focus on making Margaret River’s best-known wines, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The wines have received significant critical acclaim, including having the coveted 5 Red Star rating from James Halliday, which is awarded to “94-100 points – Outstanding. Description

Founded in 1997, West Cape Howe quickly grew a reputation as one of Western Australia’s most popular wine brands and was named Australia’s ‘Best Value Winery’ by James Halliday in 2016.

Wines are grown at two estate vineyards, the most significant being their Langton Vineyard, one of the Great Southern Region’s earliest planted vineyards, established in Mount Barker in 1978. This site grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Shiraz and has produced many trophy winning wines. The vineyards are managed with a holistic approach and use of natural management practices where possible. The wines are made at West Cape Howe’s state-of-the-art winery in Mount Barker.

Four tiers of wines are made representing a broad selection of regional hero varieties with a few surprises too.

Located 45 minutes north of Albany, the West Cape Howe Cellar Door offers wine tastings daily from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and 11am to 4pm on weekends.

Wise Wine was established by Ron and Sandra Wise in 1992 in a truly iconic setting, surrounded by vineyard and the natural bushland of Meelup Regional Park looking out to the pristine blue waters of Geographe Bay. The property’s two restaurants and expansive wine tasting list make for a spectacular experience with a vista to be remembered forever!

The Wine
The wine range aims to suit all taste preferences and budgets, offering 20 quality sparkling, white, red, dessert and fortified wines. The winemaking philosophy includes sourcing parcels of the highest quality fruit from top vineyards in the WA regions that are most-suited to grow each grape variety.

Celebrated winemaking consultant, Larry Cherubino, has overseen activities at the winery for many years. His stewardship has seen the quality of Wise Wines become some of the most awarded in the region, winning Gold medals at many Australian Wine Shows.

The Food
Wise Vineyard Restaurant is one of the best known restaurants in the region, where you can enjoy a stunning meal with ocean views. The menu features contemporary cuisine which changes regularly as local produce comes in and out of season. 

For a more casual dining experience, take a short trip down to the valley, to the banks of the Meelup Brook and visit Lot 80 Tavern & Restaurant. Housed in a historic stone and timber building built by local farmers and craftsmen, it features Italian, French, Spanish and Australian-inspired tasting and shared menus that utilise local ingredients, where possible.

Description

Established in 1973 by David and Heather Watson on Caves Road in Wilyabrup, Woodlands Wines was one of the first five vineyards to be planted in Margaret River. David and Heather’s aim was to create wines emulating the great vineyards of Bordeaux.

Early success ensued when their 1981 ‘Andrew’ Cabernet Sauvignon won trophies for ‘Best Red Wine’ at the Perth Wine Show, the Mt Barker Wine Show, and the National Wine Show. It was the first from Margaret River to achieve a National Red Wine Trophy. The second generation of the family now has the reins, with Stuart becoming winemaker in 2002 and brother Andrew joining the business full time in 2005.

Woodlands Wines has received significant critical acclaim at wine shows around the world and holds a prestigious Langton’s Classification of ‘Outstanding’ for its Cabernet Sauvignon and is one of James Halliday’s highest rated Margaret River wineries.

The Wines

Woodlands primary focus is on its red wines, specifically Cabernet Sauvignon and a selection of Bordeaux blends. A Chardonnay is made too. The vineyard is dry grown and maintained with traditional and organic methods. In the winery, Woodlands wines spend up to two years in fine French oak and minimal winemaker intervention.

Current release wines can be tasted at the cellar door daily from 10am to 5pm. No reservations are required.

Driftwood Estate is a boutique winery set in the stunning Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 on what had previously been a country retreat, the winery immediately received acclaim when its first wine, a Semillon produced in 1993, won a special commendation in a British competition.

In 2009, leading Australian wine writer James Halliday rated Driftwood Estate as one of the best wineries in the Margaret River region. This result has continued into the 2018 Wine Companion, where Driftwood Estate has again been rated a 5 Star Winery. The vine resources are exceptional, having had years of nurturing to ensure they produce premium fruit showcasing the Wilyabrup sub-region beautifully.

The winemaking philosophy behind the Driftwood wines is one of simplicity – quality wines are made in the vineyard. While winemaking can have a positive input, having premium quality fruit is essential. This is why Driftwood Estate is so fortunate to be located in one of the greatest viticultural areas in the world, sourcing super premium fruit year in year out. With premium quality fruit, our wine making philosophy is all about protecting and expressing the qualities found in the grapes, so that the wine lover can enjoy the pure, varietal and regional flavours from the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River.


The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania.

Our Single Site range of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best of Driftwood Estate. Over the years, our vineyards have grown in maturity and pedigree, and we have produced Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2016 vintage to reflect this, with releases occurring soon.

Artifacts are the more complex styles, demonstrating the intense characters old vine fruit can develop, and once in the winery, utilising oak influence and subtle winemaking techniques resulting in wines of strength, elegance, and integrity that will drink beautifully young whilst also reward careful cellaring.

The Collection range showcases fruit driven, regionally renowned wines that are designed to be enjoyed in their youth – vibrant blends and crisp, clean wines for everyday drinking.

The Oceania range is predominately a cellar door and online range, offering a Rosé, a White Blend, a Sparkling and a Tawny.

The beautiful branding takes Driftwood back to its beginnings, with small batch, hand-crafted wines showing how age and experience in the wine world can lead to memorable Collections and stunning Artifacts for people to enjoy now and into the future.
