Diving at Point Peron

This is a fair weather dive site with many swim throughs and one or two larger caves. Popular for snorkellers as well, so it’s a great family day out.

  • Activity:Diving
  • Type:Sites & Trails

Details

Description

Entry is easy via a few steps with a hand rail into the water. There is a swim of about 130m to mushroom rocks, 300m to the suggested dive site (depth 7m) and it’s about 500m to the outer reef which lies in about 10m. There are reefs to the North which are a bit of a hike to lug equipment to but worth it if you are looking for deeper caves and swim throughs.

This site is part of the Shoal Water Islands Marine Park. An alternative entry for diving the Northern Point is the car park on the Northern side of the peninsular. But a long and boring swim over sand.

The geology is limestone and whilst largely fished out, there is nevertheless plenty to see including: Sea urchins, anemones, turban shells, sea stars, octopus, sea horses, and lots of colourful growth including hard and soft corals and bait fish which are predated upon by the penguins, etc. Take a torch for the caves but be careful of overhead environments.

Penguin Island- Perth’s Premier Eco tourism Destination

Located just a 5 minute ferry ride from the mainland Penguin Island lies in the crystal clear waters of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, just 45 minutes south of Perth. As the name suggests, Penguin Islands star attraction is the penguins, it’s home to WA’s largest colony. These fascinating little birds are very shy and rarely seen in the wild but you can get up close and learn all about them with the rangers at The Penguin Experience Discovery Centre. There are three feeding sessions a day at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

Apart from the penguins, the island has beautiful beaches and secluded bays perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Nature trails allow you to easily explore the island and take in scenic lookouts. There’s also a shaded, grassed area overlooking a shallow sheltered beach which is ideal for a family picnic.

Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service from 9am- 4pm daily Sept 15 to early June. They also operate glass bottom boat cruises to view the sea lions of nearby Seal Island or take an adventure cruise through more of the marine park in search of wild dolphins. Swim with Wild Dolphins-Rockingham Wild Encounters

An unforgettable encounter with the ocean’s most loved creature. This is a wild encounter on the dolphins’ terms and in their natural environment.

  • Activity:Dolphins,Island
  • Type:Tours

Details

Description

Have you ever dreamed of swimming with wild dolphins?

Experience it today with Australia’s original and multi award winning wild dolphin specialists. With over 20 years of experience, friendship and trust built up with the local dolphins, we offer visitors a unique opportunity to interact with these fascinating creatures in their natural environment. You may see mothers nursing calves, discover how they use stingrays to catch their dinner or watch the boys showing off for the ladies. It’s the ultimate wildlife encounter!

Swim with Wild Dolphins (allow 3-6 hours + transfers)

Your adventure begins with cruising Rockingham’s sheltered bays and islands in search of any of over 200 local dolphins that your crew have come to know as friends. Before long the first dolphin sighting of the day is marked by the excited shout of ‘Found them!’ followed by the slowing down of our engines to let the dolphins know we are keen to play!

An excited buzz takes over the boat as the crew ensures you’re fully prepared to enter the water. ‘Zip your wetsuits up, masks and snorkels on and make your way to the swim deck- it’s time to get wet!’ Sleek, silvery grey dorsal fins start breaking the surface of the water within metres of the back of the boat and the skipper gives the command everyone’s been waiting for- ‘Go!’

Suddenly, you are surrounded by flashing grey torpedoes and the water is filled with whistles, splashes and laughter- both human and dolphin. They don’t do tricks and we don’t feed them, we simply spend some time enjoying each other’s company....it’s a wild encounter!

We are dedicated to ensuring the best experience for both visitors and dolphins. We ask you to remember that we are working with wild animals. Please approach each encounter with caution and respect and never assume that we have control over the dolphins’ appearance or behaviours. The dolphins approval of our friendship is reflected in our better than 99% success rate. You don’t have to be an expert swimmer to join in and no previous snorkelling experience is necessary. Just bring a sense of adventure and be ready for an unforgettable, exhilarating encounter!
