The Spectacles Wetlands

The Spectacles Wetlands is a valuable natural asset located in the eponymous suburb, 30 kilometers south of Perth's central business district, in Western Australia.

The wetlands are part of the Beeliar Regional Park and cover an area of 3.7 square kilometers. The area consists of two distinct swamps – Large Eye Swamp in the north and Small Eye Swamp in the south.

The Spectacles Wetlands offer a range of activities for nature enthusiasts. Bird watching, bushwalking, and exploring the Aboriginal Heritage Trail are amongst the highlights. The Biara Boardwalk Trail is another popular option. Starting from the McLaughlain Road car park, the trail leads visitors through a 130-meter boardwalk, into a shady paperbark forest, and ultimately to the Biara Bird Hide.

The Aboriginal Heritage Trail is a 5-kilometer loop walk around the northernmost wetland of the Spectacles, within the Beeliar Regional Park. The trail is located in the City of Kwinana and passes through interpretative panels that explain the region's flora, fauna, and the original Aboriginal inhabitants' lifestyle.

The best time to visit The Spectacles Wetlands is during the cooler months of the year, from April to October. Visitors to The Spectacles Wetlands should bring their own drinking water, as none is available on-site. The wetlands are surrounded by a 3-wire fence, with turnstile access that allows people to enter but does not permit bicycles. Visitors are expected to take all rubbish home with them.
