Margaret River Farmers' Market

The Margaret River Farmers’ Market has been a feature of the region for over 13 years and from humble beginnings the market has grown to be a Saturday morning fixture with up to 50 stalls.

  • Retailers & Producers:Farmers Markets
  • Open Days/times:Every Saturday, April to October 8am-12pm & November to March 7:30am-11:30am
  • Facilities:Family Friendly,Takeaway

Details

  • Type:Food retailer

Description

Only producers from the local Shires and surrounding south west are eligible to set up a stall, and the stalls are operated by the people who grow or make the produce. This makes the Margaret River Market one of only a few genuine Farmers’ Markets in the state.

The Farmers’ Market is a business incubator, with local producers testing new products and developing new enterprises from the opportunity created by its thriving, vibrant atmosphere. Each market features a breakfast bar run by a local charity, school or sporting organisation to raise funds for their cause.

In an environment where food supply in Australia is increasingly controlled by large supermarket chains, the market is an important alternative outlet for produce and an integral part of successful farmers’ businesses. Customers can connect with the producers of the food they eat, and feel confident that the produce has a low carbon footprint, supports local livelihoods, and helps to preserve the environmental integrity of the Margaret River Region.

“It’s Saturday morning in Margaret River and the market is bustling. Producers have been up since first light to prepare their produce, stalls packed and ready. As the sun rises and warms the day, customers arrive with their shopping bags and trolleys, keen to see what seasonal delights the market has to offer. Some are locals doing their regular weekly shop; others are weekend visitors exploring the market for gourmet delicacies.

The breakfast bar and coffee van are doing great business, and people take the time to stop and chat to the stall holders and with others from their community. Music adds a festival atmosphere; children play, dance and cast coins into the buskers’ welcoming hats. Baskets and bags are laden with fresh fruit and vegies, olive oil, locally raised meats, bread and handmade cheese.
Perhaps there will be a special treat of handmade chocolate or cake for the kids, nougat and a bottle of wine for the grown-ups. Back at home, the kitchen will be filled with healthy local produce, much of it organic, and all farmed and made with passion, care and consideration for the health and wellbeing of a community and the land we call home.”

Description

We started making soap in 1993 when our three children were diagnosed with eczema and dermatitis, and were advised by Doctors not to use soap or shampoo. This inspired us to research, seeking a chemical free, natural alternative. We realised the only way we could guarantee that the products were natural and healthy was to make our own.

After experimenting with many recipes and ingredients finally came up with a range of bars using a traditional cold process method of soap making with extra virgin olive oil as the main base, along with ingredients, carefully chosen not only for their therapeutic values but because each must work as a skin care product. 100% essential oils & pure plant extracts are used to add perfume to the products in order to rejuvenate and maintain healthy skin. Organically grown teas, clays, flowers, herbs & spices add texture and colour into the soap range.

The soap business began in 1996 using a bucket and wooden spoon to make the soap in the family kitchen from the farm in Kojonup Western Australia in 1996 under the label Synergistic Blend. Subsequent growth saw the opening of a boutique factory in Margaret River Western Australia, The Natural Olive Oil Soap Factory expanding the range into moisturising lotions, skin balms, scrubs, bath and massage oils.

Now named Vasse Virgin, the factory is nestled in amongst vine covered slopes and National parks where visitors are welcome and products can be tried and tested, delighting your senses with beautiful fusions of the finest extra virgin olive oil and pure essential oils from around the world.

In our experience the commitment to extra virgin olive oil as the base for our products is fundamental to our success. The history of olive oil mirrors the history of western civilisation. It has truly unique characteristic which benefit the most sensitive of skins.

It is our aim to produce a range of products that are mild and gentle on sensitive skin but are also luxurious products that your body can savour.

The soap has developed into a highly sought after product selling thousands of cakes in our unique retail outlet and also to Australian Pharmacies, Gourmet & Health Food Stores, throughout Australia, exporting overseas, supplying an international hotel chain with soap as well as supplying a number of international stores.
