Description

Established in 2003 by owner and winemaker Brad Wehr, Amato Vino embraces a minimal intervention winemaking philosophy, focused on ancient techniques, natural processes, gentle fruit handling, wild-ferments and minimal science. This old-school approach permits an exciting range of creativity within the estate's eclectic variety of wines produced from impressive fruit parcels in Margaret River and the Riverland region of South-Eastern Australia.

The Wines

The three brands within Wehr's portfolio are Wine by Brad, Mantra and Amato Vino, encompassing lesser-seen varieties like Nero d'Avola, Fiano, Bela, Montepulciano, Nebbiolo, Teroldego, Carignano, Graciano, Tannat, Tempranillo and Trosseau, alongside regional favourits; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Amato Vino's 'Urban Cellar Door' is open at the Margaret River Collaborative for wine tastings and sales from Thursday to Sunday, 11am - 4pm.

Description

Established in 2010 by Rob and Tash Arthur, Arthur Wines specialises in making fortified wines in the heart of the Margaret River wine region. Winemaker Tash developed a keen interest in fortified wines whilst working in Portugal and Rutherglen and Rob previously worked at Leeuwin estate.

The main wines, named ‘Glass Slipper’ and ‘Ruby Slipper’, are made with premium, mostly handpicked fruit, fermented with the addition of brandy spirit and aged on lees in Cognac barrels.

The estate produce 'Glass Slipper', a white fortified made with handpicked Chardonnay and Semillon and aged on lees in Cognac barrels. A Muscat is made too.

Wines are available at selected outlets across the state. Cellar door by appointment only.

 

Blue Poles Vineyard

Two geologists scoured over 1000kms before planting their dream vineyard east of Margaret River, with a range including Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Shiraz and Italian varieties Fiano and Teroldego.

Description

This winery takes its name from an iconic Australian painting, ‘Blue Poles: Number 11, 1952) by artist Jackson Pollock, who was known for paintings of grace, depth, wonder and awe. The Blue Poles painting was a watershed acquisition by the National Australian Gallery in the 1970s, representing a move toward from colonial ties to free thought and independence in Australia. Blue Poles vineyard aims to emulate these traits in its vineyard and wines.

The vineyard is a joint venture between two geologists, Mark Gifford and Tim Markwell, who committed to their business plan from a minesite donga in 2001. They inspected thousands of kilometres of land before settling on the property 15 kilometres east of the Margaret River township for its large pockets of iron-rich gravels over clay, slopes to the south-west and cool climate for the long ripening of fruit.

A total of 7 hectares have been planted at Blue Poles vineyard, with 6.3 hectares dedicated to Merlot, Shiraz Cabernet Franc and Viognier. The remainder is dedicated to small sections of various trial varieties.

The wine range includes a Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Shiraz and Italian varieties; Fiano and Teroldego. The flagship ‘Allouran’ is a Bordeaux-inspired blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and represents the owners’ core belief that location, soil, climate, passion and history can achieve special wines.

Description

Carpe Diem is the heart-warming winery of Gianfranco and Francesco Anderle, a delightful winemaking family who visited Margaret River in 2000, fell in love with the region and sold up their assets to chase their dreams with a 75 hectare property in Wilyabrup. Hence the name, Carpe Diem!

The Wines
Winemaker Gianfranco trained at the world’s oldest wine school in Europe, Conegliano in Northern Italy. He brings a strong European approach to his winemaking, every aspect of which he does in his custom-built winery, including hand-bottling his wines. Italian varieties are the focus such as pinot grigio, schiaffo, vermentino, nebiolo and decantato. 

Wine Tasting
Known for the beautiful Italian hospitality, Gianfranco and Francesca love meeting their guests and personally providing complimentary tastings of all the wines from their winery-based tasting table. Look out for a few small-batch special release wines are available exclusively at the cellar door from time to time.

Chimes Estate

Nestled in a tranquil valley North East of Margaret River, surrounded by forests and cattle farms is this boutique farm and vineyard growing premium wine, olives and limes, all available online.

Description

Unique Highlights
While there is no cellar door, corporate or private tastings of the wines and olive oils can be arranged in Perth or at the property for a small fee (or purchase of wines). Description

Located on the upper reaches of Ellensbrook between Cowaramup and the coast is this family-run property, established by Russell and Marilyn Reynolds, with wines created by their sons Cameron (Viticulturist) and Anthony (Winemaker).

Since 2001 the vineyard has followed biodynamic and organic principles to maintain quality and unique personality within the wines. They follow the traditional belief that a vineyard should show the characteristics that come from the unique elements that make up the ‘terroir’ of the individual site and that biodynamics is the best approach through which to achieve this.

The Clown Fish Wines are handcrafted from 100% estate grown fruit, sourced from the family vineyard. These site-expressive wines showcase the individuality of the vineyard’s Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with personality and regional flair.

Description

One of the originals of Margaret River’s new-generation small-batch, hand-made winemakers. Created by Josephine Perry, Dormilona wines (meaning lazy-bones in Spanish) are crafted from small batches of naturally farmed fruit purchased from quality certified organic and biodynamic vineyards around Margaret River.

The label was a finalist as Australia’s Young Gun Winemaker of the Year in 2014.

The wines are made in ancient styles with no additives, fining and very little intervention. This approach aims to fully express the vineyard’s character to make tasty wines that are alternative in fashion and style.

The range focuses on Margaret River’s signature varieties with a few Spanish surprises and a series made in terracotta amphora pots called, ‘Clayface.’

Edinger Estate

Description

Chalice Bridge is the second largest single vineyard in Margaret River. It is family owned and operated by Jason and Alecia Brown. The Chalice Bridge name comes from the bridge over the Upper Chapman Brook, which runs through the middle of the vineyard.

The vineyard was established two decades ago with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. 

The Wines
The wines reflect the cool climate characteristics, poise and purity of southern Margaret River fruit. Three wine ranges of Margaret River’s signature varieties are made; The Estate, The Quest and The Chalice.

Description

Set in the beautiful Forest Grove just south of Margaret River is this tiny grape-grower and winemaker. Flowstone is the creation of local winemaker of 30+ years of experience, Stuart Pimms and wine fanatic businessman, Phil Giglia.

Their vineyard is located 6km inland from the Indian Ocean, where the Margaret River Plateau joins the Leeuwin Naturaliste coastal strip. Their approach is hands-on throughout the journey from grape to glass. Retaining their boutique size allows for an intimate understanding of the vines, the land and the production.

Critic James Halliday said of Flowstone early on, “every now and then a new producer will pop up with wines that are really good, and ultimately vie for inclusion in the list of ten of the best new wineries in the next Companion... this is one new winery that will quite certainly be in the top 10, for its ranks among the best I can remember."

The Wines
With an aim to be interesting and enjoyable, Flowstone creates both regional classics and some surprise styles like a rich and Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon Touriga (a Portuguese twist in Margaret River’s famed red). Grace Farm

Description

Nestled in the Cowaramup Brook valley and the lee of the Leeuwin Ridge in the Margaret River sub region of Wilyabrup, Grace Farm is a small, family-owned vineyard that uses organic principles to produce premium handcrafted wines.

Owned by John and Elizabeth Mair, Grace Farm was planted in 2006 and the first vintage produced in 2010. Grace Farm was one of the first vineyards in the district to plant the vines into weed-matting, avoiding the use of herbicide sprays which often accompany vineyard establishment. The Mair family has a keen interest in the unique biodiversity values present on Grace Farm. Floristic and avian fauna surveys have been carried out and monitoring of populations is ongoing. 

The farmhouse was designed according to solar passive design principles and supports a roof-top solar array which feeds excess power back into the electricity grid, helping to reduce the property’s carbon footprint.

The Wines

The award-winning range includes a barrel-matured Sauvignon Blanc Semillon, Burgundian style Chardonnay and two quintessential Margaret River style Cabernets.

Wine Tastings

Private tastings can be booked. They are held on the deck of the farmhouse in the company of viticulturist Tim Quinlan and include the opportunity to sample all wines while enjoying views over the vineyard and valley. A tour of the vineyard may also be included. Winemaker Jonathan Mettam is often present for larger group bookings.

One of WA’s most awarded winemakers, Larry Cherubino Wines makes an expressive range from a collection of estate-owned vineyards in Margaret River, Pemberton and the Great Southern (Frankland River, Mount Barker and Porongurup areas). The label began in Frankland River in 2004 when Larry and wife, Edwina purchased an historic property called Riversdale. The inaugural 2005 vintage wines were made in the family’s spare room! These days they are made in a well-equipped winery in Margaret River.

Larry Cherubino Wines was named James Halliday’s Australian Winery of the Year in 2011, and also Australia’s Best-Value Winery by Halliday in 2017. Winemaker Larry Cherubino has a string of Winemaker of the Year nominations with leading Australian and UK wine media.

The Wines
Following the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard, Larry Cherubino Wines are made from six specialty vineyards in Western Australia’s leading south-west wine regions. The wines are estate-grown and the vineyards follow a mix of principles from the schools of organics and traditional farming with the aim to encourage the vines to exist in a healthy ecosystem, for plant health. The range has a characterful selection of site-driven examples of Riesling and Chardonnay, alongside alternative varieties including Fiano and Pinot Blanc. Classic Cabernet and Shiraz are made too.

Wine Tasting
Enjoy a seasonal range of wines for tasting at all times alongside a selection of cellar door exclusives. An enomatic machine holds a curated range of rare back vintage wines which can be enjoyed as educational (and highly enjoyable) flights. Private tastings in the board room or barrel room can be booked in advance for groups. Antipasti and dinners are available by special arrangement.

If you want a good laugh, ask Larry about the dog in the bedroom incident. It all happened to a mate of his apparently!!

Moss Wood was established as a specialist, high-quality vineyard and winery. This was its raison d’être and continues to provide the motivation for its existence.

Clare & Keith Mugford, have been tending the vineyard and making wine at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. They believe that all decisions made in the vineyard and winery underpin the quality of the wine.

The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality.

Wine Tasting

Moss Wood welcome members for tastings and private visits by appointment only. There is a small charge for the visit which is redeemable against any wine purchased. Appointments can be made via the Moss Wood web site.

Description

Owner and winemaker Robert Gheradi was born with wine in his blood, spending his Summers growing up picking grapes in the Swan Valley and Margaret River with his extended Italian family to make into wine at his Nonna’s house. Whilst completing his degree in viticulture and winemaking, Robert worked for the esteemed Moss Wood winery, and later at Cullen Wines before spending time with leading Barolo producers before returning to Margaret River to establish Mr Barval (combining Margaret River, Barolo and Valtellina) in 2015.

The centuries-old winemaking traditions of Barolo influenced the ancient winemaking techniques utilised within Mr Barval's production. The wines are fermented with only natural yeasts and basket-pressed grapes to provide the most sensitive juice extraction to make handcrafted wines of balance, elegance and purity. The fruit comes from ultra-high quality grapes throughout Margaret River.

The Wines

The Mr Barval range includes Chardonnay, Rose and Cabernet Merlot. There’s also  an early harvest style Nebbiolo called ‘Nebbia’ and Rhone-inspired white, ‘Mistral’ made from Viognier and Marsanne. Wines can be purchased online or at various stockists throughout WA.

Oates Ends

Description

In 2000, siblings Cath and Russ Oates made a red blend in their farm shed to share with friends and family. The grapes came from the ends of the vine rows the machine harvester couldn’t pick, hence the name. Fruit was picked from various blocks and varieties around the region and added to the ferment until there was sufficient volume for a barrel or two. That’s how Oates Ends was born.

A decade later and with an impressive international winemaking career behind her, Cath decided it was time to make wines to capture the evident quality of the family’s Wilangri vineyard, first planted in 1999. Oates Ends was reborn.

The vineyard grows Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc on complex loam soils over deep well draining gravels, producing fine, elegant, structured wines. Careful management and hand harvesting of fruit enables the finest detailed winemaking approach. The vineyard is run with sustainable principles. The wine range includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon.

A new winery and cellar door facility is under development.  Vineyard Tours are available by appointment

Description

Rosabrook Wines has a long-term reputation for its elegant, fruit-driven and youthful wines. The property was originally set up as a dairy farm in the 1930s and became a vineyard in the 1980s. It is owned by the Calneggia Family, who also make Bunkers Wines, Calneggia Wines and Brian Fletcher Signature wines from their premium Margaret River vineyards. Winemaker Brian Fletcher began his career in 1978 and has extensive experience internationally as well as within Margaret River.

Description

Owner Dan Stocker began his hisvinous endeavours studying in Adelaide & then as winemaker in the Yarra Valley. 

Based at Arimia Estate, Heretic Wines is guided by Dan's passion for growing sustainably - translating vineyard to bottle with minimal intervention. His wines are made with indigenous yeast, no new oak, minimal lees stirring and gentle extractions to create interesting and complex wines that are unfined, unfiltered and unstabilised.
