See the beautiful spaces of this world-class museum come alive as our Performance Making students create bespoke moments of performance in response to the WA Museum building and its collections. Folds takes inspiration from images of geological folding; the visualisation of time written into rocks. This exciting, original work uses the new Museum to contemplate how we can ‘fold’ the present moment back in time to link it to a moment in the past as a particular kind of memory and memorial.

Description
In the winter of 1838-9 Frédéric Chopin – along with his lover, the brilliant and pioneering writer George Sand – hunkered down in a former monastery in Majorca, determined to complete the set of 24 Preludes he had picked away at since 1836.
The story of the primitive local instrument on which Chopin completed this great monument of the Romantic piano literature is key to this unique collaboration between director Richard Pyros, a yet to be announced actor, and pianist Aura Go – a Musica Viva FutureMaker, equipped with an astonishing palette and imagination. Drawing on an inspiring cast of real-life characters set amongst a complete performance of the Preludes, these three artists trace the rich history and ultimate fate of the Majorcan piano, in a dramatic mix of words and music, adapted from Paul Kildea’s book Chopin’s Piano. Their performance underlines the sheer originality of the Preludes, the enduring power of Chopin, and the changing nature of his music over time.

Description
Each day that Vivaldi walked the streets of traversed the canals of Venice, a key port and global trade centre, it brought him into contact with a flurry of sounds, smells, languages and thought that were like no other in Europe. From the Otomman Empire and the vast depths of Arabic intellectual and cultural life, through to North Africa and what would become India, Venice was a community where design, food religion and the arts didn't just mingle, they absorbed and integrated. Vivaldi's much-loved bastion of western music, The Four Seasons, could only have emerged from the melting pot.

Description
This exhibition attempts to showcase works of art that reflect the depth of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture, with other aspects of the Aboriginal condition. As a result, radical observations about the ups and downs of life will, at times, weave in and out of stories about Country. Equally, across the show, visitors will encounter passages of serenity, corridors of tradition, and trails that speak to the upheavals experienced by generations of Indigenous people. Balancing Act features the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists living and working across the State and Australia. Works of art by local Noongar artists such as Revel Cooper (dec.), Sandra Hill, Dianne Jones and Shane Pickett (dec.) sit loud-and-proud among those by Richard Bell, Karla Dickens, Julie Dowling and Brian Robinson to name a few of the many stellar artists in the show. Description
Alex Martinis Roe sets out to explore feminist, lesbian and queer kinship structures via a non-linear genealogy of the artist’s own kin. Alex Martinis Roe explores feminist genealogies and seeks to foster specific and productive relationships between different generations as a way of participating in the construction of feminist histories and futures. This involves developing research and storytelling methodologies that employ non-linear understandings of time, respond to the specific practices of different communities, experiment with the set-up of discursive encounters and imagine how these entanglements can inform new political practices.

Description
Conceived for the central gallery space at PICA, Amy Perejuan-Capone presents a new body of work including sculpture, video and installation, using the dramatic height of the gallery for the presentation of historical hang gliders. Perejuan-Capone‘s practice is underpinned by an enquiry into the systems of exchange that are present through the acquisition and application of craft. Across broad mediums including ceramics, textiles and metalworks, she seeks to understand objects, materials and the networks of social and cultural agency held within them. Present in her work, which often take form as large scale sculptural installations, are the interconnected systems of environment, production, labour and personal and social histories.
