Description

A boutique winery that operates ‘off the grid’, Arimia was established in 1997 by Ann Spencer. Located in the north end of Margaret River, it makes the most of its superb environment, surrounded by the untouched Cape Naturaliste National Park and the Indian Ocean, to make an innovative range of estate-grown wines.

The vineyard follows organic practices and grows a diverse mix of grapes, from Margaret River’s classics of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon through to Mourvedre, Zinfandel and Verdehlo.

Wine Tasting

One of the most authentic food and wine experiences to be found in Margaret River,

the acclaimed wine range can be sampled at the relaxed cellar door, built primarily using recycled and plantation timber.

The Food

Awarded ‘Gourmet Traveller Regional Restaurant of the Year’ 2018, Arimia’s menu comes mostly from farm-grown produce including pork and trout raised on the 55ha property. The kitchen, headed by chef Evan Hayter is dedicated to utilising entire animals, with a no-waste approach that encourages creativity. Bookings are highly recommended. Open Thursday to Tuesday for lunch.

Description

A long-time quiet achiever in Margaret River, the highly-awarded Ashbrook Estate began in 1979 and has been owned by three generations of the Devitt family. Located in the heart of Wilyabrup, it remains a boutique operation with a strong focus on handmade, single-vineyard premium wines. All fruit is grown, made, bottled and packaged at within the estate for ultimate quality control.

The Wines

The focused range reflects Margaret River’s regional heroes; Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, along with a Riesling and a Verdelho. The estate began entering wine shows in 1999 and that year won the SGIO Winemakers Awards. A string of accolades and critical acclaim has followed.

Description

This delightful winery is located in the heart of Margaret River. Owners Noni and Bill Ilic are hands-on in all aspects of the business, from planting and tending the vines, winemaking and hand-selling their wines from the cellar door. Making premium wines is their passion, which happens to also be their business.

The Wines
The Beckett’s Flat vineyard was first planted in 1992. The vineyard is managed primarily with organic practices and the wines are all made on site in the pair’s small, but well-equipped winery.

Early success in Australian and overseas wine shows led the Ilic’s to focus their wines style toward making delicious, food-friendly, early drinking wines that are fruit-driven and elegant. The stunning range includes diverse styles from traditional method Sparkling White and Rosé to dry, crisp and fruity whites, elegant reds and even a White Port. Their Five Stones label is recognised for producing Australia’s finest Kosher and vegan-friendly wines.

Wine Tasting
The boutique Cellar Door is located just off Bussell Highway and open daily most days. Be sure to greet the doorman ‘Raff’, a Sable German Shephard. He especially loves visitors that throw a stick for him. Wines are very reasonably priced with generous case specials too. Cellar door open 10am to 5pm

Unique Highlights
Owner / Winemaker Bill’s other passion is photography and he has studied under renowned US photographers Fred Picker (Zone VI) and George de Wolfe. The cellar door doubles as a gallery showcasing Bill’s stunning images of the region in all its natural glory. A selection of old cameras and photographic equipment are exhibited too.

The Wines

The philosophy behind the restaurant is to Match food and wine. The menu comprises of Match Plates where components match the characteristics in the recommended wine. Grazing plates & cheese plates are also available.

Description

What began as a passion for wine in 1987 for Vic Kordic has blossomed into an impressive operation with an award-winning wine range. Sons Mark and Paul Kordic now head the vineyard and make cool climate estate-grown and bottled wines with elegant and unique character from their boutique operation.

The Wines

The wines have a great depth of flavour and texture born from sensitive winemaking and fermentation with natural yeast in the Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, reflective of Manjimup’s ideal growing conditions. The award-winning range also includes Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and a Sparkling Merlot.

Description

This family owned, single-vineyard property was established in 1999. The Fokkema family selected the site for its ideal gravel loam soils, ample clean water and northern-facing slopes. The vineyard has been farmed organically for 15 years and is in the process of completing its ‘Certified Organic’ accreditation.

The Churchview vineyard is known to grow Margaret River’s most extensive amount of varieties within a single vineyard, with sixteen different types of grapes planted.

The Wines
The wines are made onsite at the property’s winery. Many are matured in oak, and Churchview prides itself on investing in the best quality French oak. Four wine ranges are made from the diverse varieties within the vineyard and offer easy drinking through to rare and fine collector wines. All the classic Margaret River varieties are made. The St Johns range features less-common varieties including a Zinfandel, Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, Viognier and Marsanne.

Wine Tasting
The diverse wine range can be tasted at the Cellar Door which is located within a period cottage at the estate. The Heritage Listed St John the Baptist Anglican Church can be seen from the tasting room, hence the name. Many of the wines cannot be found for purchase anywhere other than the cellar door. Allow 30 minutes for a full tasting. Open 10am-5pm Monday to Saturday.

Dogs are welcome (on leash) and visitors are invited to bring a picnic and make a day of enjoying the beautiful wines, stunning vineyard views and manicured gardens.

Unique Highlights
Those seeking curio wines will love discovering the wild fermented Riesling, Viognier and Chenin Blanc; varieties not often seen in Margaret River.

Deep Woods Estate is one of Australia’s most highly-awarded wineries, and was awarded Australia’s most significant wine trophy, the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the Deep Woods Estate 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 2005, Deep Woods has been part of the Fogarty Family’s Fogarty Wine Group, which also owns Evans & Tate in Margaret River, the iconic Lake's Folly vineyard in the Hunter Valley, Smithbrook in Pemberton and Millbrook Winery and Restaurant in the Perth Hills, Western Australia.

Description

Donnelly River Wines was one of the first in the region Pemberton wine region. Established on the Donnelly River in 1985, the property’s rich river flats, surrounding hills and tall Karri trees have proved ideal for premium viticulture; the vines benefitting from the dry, cool ripening period within the area.

The Wines

Donnelly River's range includes an approachable mix of sweet to dry red and white wines, prosecco and traditional method sparkling and classic port and muscat. Wines can be purchased at the Pemberton cellar door, the Donnelly warehouse in Joondalup or online.

Set in Wilyabrup, on what was formerly a country retreat, Driftwood Estate received instant acclaim when its first ever wine, the 1993 Semillon, won a special commendation in a UK wine competition.

The boutique winery was established by Tom and Helen Galopoulos in 1989 and makes estate-grown wines with a simplistic approach to winemaking in order to best express the qualities of its ultra-premium grapes. The wines are pure, varietal and regional, leading to Driftwood Estate’s consistent rating as 5 Star Winery James Halliday winery.

The Wines
The wines are produced under four labels, Single Site, Artifacts, The Collection, and Oceania. The focus is Margaret River’s hero varieties in approachable to rare and fine styles.  There’s also a sparkling wine, rosé and a Tawny.

Wine Tasting
Taking in beautiful views across the undulating vines, the Driftwood Estate Cellar Door offers the opportunity to taste the wine range as well as olive oil made from estate-grown olives. There’s a relaxing verandah for a glass of wine in summer and cosy log fires in winter. Large group tastings can be booked in advance. Open daily 10am to 5pm.

Description

Set on 165 acres, Fishbone Cellar Door and Japanese Restaurant is part of Fishbone Wines farm and planted with Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Tempranillo. The vineyard setting is typical to the Margaret River region, north facing with a combination of loam and sandy pea gravel with a well-drained soil structure. The focus is on stripped back, raw quality winemaking, which is what the Fishbone symbol represents.

Wine Tasting

The modest and contemporary cellar door space – with striking aquarium – is open daily, offering complimentary tastings of over 20 different wines, sourced from WA’s leading wine regions Margaret River, Frankland River and Geographe.

Description

Flinders Bay makes its wines from their vineyard in Karridale, located nearby Flinders bay, where the climate is distinctly cooler. Scientific data suggests it may be Western Australia’s coolest grape growing area. The vineyard is planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The vineyard is run with the sole focus of growing the highest quality grapes and natural farming methods are utilised where possible.

The Wines
Over 10 different wines are made, including dry to sweet still whites, a rosé, reds and a traditional method NV sparkling. The wines are available through local retailers.

Description

Green Door Vineyard & Winery is a small boutique winery in the Ferguson Valley. Ashley & Kath Keeffe purchased the run-down vineyard in 2006 and set about restoring and replanting, with the Grenache and Tempranillo finding near perfect conditions. Other grapes in the vineyard include Monastrell, Shiraz, Fiano, and Verdelho.

Ashley is very conscious of soil health and the vineyard is managed with a minimal intervention ethos, creating fruit with great flavour. All grapes are handpicked and basket pressed, with all wines made on the property by Ashley and consultant winemaker, Vanessa Carson. Various different wine making techniques are used including the use of Amphora pots for fermentation, cold soaking on skins and the addition of whole bunches to ferments.

There is a cellar door cafe on the property serving sharing style grazing platters showcasing local produce. The focal point of the cellar door is the grand green door, imported from Fez, Morocco. The Moorish theme of the winery and cafe menu matches the predominantly Spanish/European characteristics of the wines. Ash, Kath and their team take great satisfaction in being involved in the whole process of growing, making and sharing the enjoyment of the wines.

Description

Jeff and Kerry Ovens originally had eyes on Margaret River to start up their Vineyard, but found the prime land they were looking for in the Ferguson Valley. Originally a dairy farm for than 100 years, the land was perfect for a Vineyard and 15,000 rootling’s were planted in 1998.

In 2014 Hackersly won the Gold plate Award for the best Restaurant in a Winery in Regional WA. Happs Wines has delighted visitors from near and far at their warm and rustic cellar door for over 35 years. Their aim to provide a wine for every palate is reflected in their extensive portfolio and willingness to break convention in terms of the size of their range and number of wine varieties within it.

The Wines
Happs Wines produces more than thirty grape varieties, all made from estate-grown fruit at two Margaret River vineyards. The northern Dunsborough vineyard enjoys a warmer growing season of rich and ripe qualities, while the southern ‘Three Hills’ property brings cooler-climate elegance and finesse. The wine range includes sweet, dry, preservative free, fortified, rare varietal, verjuice and more.

Wine Tasting
The rustic cellar door was built in the 1970s and is constructed of handmade mud-bricks. Look closely to see builders’ finger marks on the walls, capturing, “the essence of old school Margaret River". It's not flashy, minimalistic or modern, just warm and inviting. The surroundings feel homely and the cellar door staff offer a friendly, educated approach to explain the extensive portfolio of wines.

Culinary Experiences
Grab a basket and select from a range of gourmet cheese, meats, pickled vegetables and preserves from more than 15 local producers, pair with some Happs Wine and indulge! Picnic on the lawn, at the outside tables, or inside if it’s a rainy day.

The Commonage Pottery 
Happs Pottery began in Vasse in the early 1970s. The current workshop and gallery located onsite was built in 1978. See artists at work in the act of creation. A wide range of handicrafts and jewellery from local artisans is available.

Back in the 1970s two young teachers named Erl and Ros Happ were inspired by the notion that world-class wines might be produced in the Margaret River region. At the time, new grape varieties were becoming more readily available in WA and this encouraged the couple to not only plant the usual cultivars that became a mark of the region but to experiment with unusual selections that presented more risk. This pioneering spirit has paid off. Since 1978, Happs Wines has become a hallmark of combining science and art to create unique wines of distinctive quality, with a loyal following.

Description

The Harmans Estate team scour the region for unique parcels of fruit to make single vineyard wines that display a strong sense of place. Established in 1999 the family-owned small-batch winery is one of the only producers in Margaret River that process, produce, bottle and label wines all on site to control all aspects of quality.

The Wines
In addition to Margaret River’s classic varieties, look out for a unique Shiraz Tempranillo and Sparkling Pink Pinot Noir. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc Liqueurs are some of the only of their kind in Margaret River and the wine-based spirits are seriously unique too.

The entire wine, liqueur and spirits collection is available for tasting daily at the cellar door between 10am – 5pm.

Unique Highlights
The Harmans Estate winemakers love a creative challenge and set out to make Australia’s first Pisco. The range includes three noteworthy flavours. The Gin Gin Gin is crafted from barrel-fermented Gin Gin clone chardonnay (a mysterious clone that found its way to the Margaret River region and now dominates). This truly unique gin is triple distilled and infused with Certified Organic botanicals. Perhaps the rarest Gin in the world, with only 128 bottles made.

Description

Established in 2000 by the Hillier family, the estate is a single vineyard producer that also operates a microbrewery and accommodation from its premises. Situated 5km north of Collie, on the eastern border of the Geographe Wine Region, this prime location provides ironstone gravel soils and a cool altitude to enable production of premium wines with finesse and flavour.

The Wines

Harris River produce Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Verdelho and Chardonnay. They also have the unique offer of purchasing wine in a keg, perfect for events or who like to keep their environment footprint minimal.

Cellar Door & Restaurant

Complimentary wine and beer tastings can be enjoyed alongside a tasty, seasonal tapas grazing menu. Open Wednesday to Sunday 12pm - 3:30pm. The restaurant is open for light, healthy breakfasts and tapas lunches from Friday to Sunday, 10am - 4pm. Visitors can dine alfresco on the verandah, have a picnic on the lawn, or sit inside the restaurant beside a cosy log fire.

Known for its iconic old red truck, this family-owned estate produces single variety, single-vineyard wines at that can be enjoyed with the owner-makers at their Metricup cellar door.

Established in 2017, the Haywood Wine Company is located at the Island Brook Estate to the north of the Margaret River wine region. The Metricup vineyard was first planted in 1985, utilising specific grape varieties to match the property's well drained gravel loam soils.

The wines made include Cabernet Rose, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cellar Door

This stunning winery was planted from scratch by owner Michael Gould and his father in 1996. The wines are available only from the cellar door, a sleek architecturally designed property perched beside a spectacular lake that can be crossed by footbridge.

The hands-on family owners live onsite and manage their vineyard through biological farming principles with a focus on nourishing their soils naturally to make healthy vines and flavourful grapes.

The Wines

100% estate grown, all the Margaret River favourites are made, plus those who prefer a sweeter wine will love the extensive options made at Knotting Hill Estate which include a Sparkling Muscat, Verdehlo, Late Harvest White and a Rose.

Wine Tasting

The wines are available exclusively from the Cellar Door and the range is available for tastings every day. A tapas menu is available from 11am to 4pm, look out for the delicious platters of cheeses, meats and more.

Thinking about visiting in June? Make time for Knotting Hill Estate’s Annual Marron Feast, a weekend dedicated to the south-west’s favourite crustacean, during which this seafood treat can be enjoyed at the property’s restaurant in a host of different ways. Aside from wine, the family are keen marron farmers, and live marron can often be purchased to take home from the cellar door too.

Description

Sandalford has been making superb West Australian wines for over 175 years. While the primary property is in the Swan Valley, the Margaret River cellar door is worth visiting, a cleverly-designed space made from rammed earth, surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest. Open daily from 10am to 5pm, a pergola and onsite BBQs make Sandalford a lovely place for a picnic with the family.

A Notable History
Sandalford was established in 1840 in the early days of the Perth colony’s settlement. The property was granted to WA’s first Surveyor General John Septimus Roe by Queen Victoria, to honour his 57 years of Service to the Commonwealth. He named it Sandalford after a priory in his original home of Birkshire, England.

The property had a diverse agricultural history and originally thrived growing table grapes, which became a lucrative export. Winemaking accelerated after World War II with a growing community of Croatian and Italian migrants bringing vast knowledge and techniques to the young Swan Valley wine industry. In 1970 the Roe family expanded to Margaret River, planting a vineyard on prime land in Wilyabrup.

In 1990, Sandalford was acquired by the Prendiville family, who own a portfolio of iconic tourism and hospitality establishments around WA. The Prendiville’s have invested significantly in the brand, the wines and the impressive estate.

The Wines
Sandalford makes five ranges of wines from its vineyards in the Swan Valley and Margaret River. There are over 25 wines, including sparkling, red, white, dessert and fortified wines. The winery incorporates the state-of-the-art-technology, while retaining winemaking traditions, such as small batch fruit processing and using the best quality French and American oak.

Wine Tasting
The entire Sandalford wine range (and often some other special wines) can be tasted at their Margaret River cellar door and grand Swan Valley estate. The Margaret River cellar door is a cleverly-designed space, made from rammed earth. It is surrounded by beautiful, country gardens, vines and native forest.

Description

Located 7km from Donnybrook, in the Preston Valley, Thomson Brook was established in 1993 by Pam and Terry Foster. Traditionally, the region has been renowned as WA's premier apple-growing area, however, in recent years Donnybrook has established a steady reputation as a new and vibrant viticultural area. The estate produces a range of quality wines from hand-picked grapes, which are grown in the rich loam soils of the region.

The Wines

White varieties include Riesling, Semillon, Verdelho and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc; and reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Merlot, Shiraz, Tempranillo and a Port.

Cellar Door

Tastings and wine sales are available at the Thomson Brook cellar door, which also offers barbecue facilities and fresh local produce for sale. Open daily from 10am - 6pm.

A second generation, family-owned, regional pioneer whose timber and stone cellar door, stunning views of the Wilyabrup Valley and classical Margaret River ambience are a real treat for the senses.

Description

In 1976 school teachers Kevin and Marian Squance planted a tiny vineyard with Verdehlo, Semillon, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over forty years on, and with two vineyards, 25 hectares of vines and a new generation of the family running the show, this quaint little winery has become one of Margaret River’s most prestigious, boutique producers.

The Willespie vineyard sites were selected for their French-like qualities; particularly their layered, well-draining gravel soils which are perfect for premium viticulture. The name Willespie, blends the region Wilyabrup and the French word espérer meaning ‘to hope’.

The Wines

The varietal wines are made with modern viticultural practices and minimal winemaking intervention. In addition to their ‘Old School Chardonnay and Semillon’, the range includes all the regional classics; Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Shiraz. Sweeter palates will love trying the rare Verdelho.

Cellar Door

Nestled amongst the picturesque setting of expansive vineyards, rolling hills and natural bushland, the cellar door is built from stone and timber sourced from the property. Wine tastings are available 10.30am to 5pm daily, except Wednesdays.
