Description

Goongarrie National Park lies on the edge of the vast mulga woodlands of the Murchison region and offers a remote outback experience to those with an adventurous spirit.

Goongarrie National Park features a number of granite outcrops and includes part of Lake Marmion. There are attractive wildflowers after good rains. The Goongarrie homestead complex has a rustic homestead, sandalwood camp and shearer’s cottage in good working order.

Rustic accommodation

You may camp either in the three main buildings or outside. All the buildings have tables, wood barbeques, water supply, rainwater, showers, some furniture and provisions for electricity (bring your own generator). The facility offers a venue for bush workshops, or group and school excursions. Camping fees apply. Bookings can be made through Parks and Wildlife's Kalgoorlie office.

Indigenous importance

Goongarrie has many important Aboriginal sites, including the adjacent Adelong Station managed by the Menzies Aboriginal Corporation, rockholes, graves and watering points (Comet Vale and Dead Man’s Soak).

Rush for gold

Goongarrie was the first important gold find after Coolgardie. First miners named the area Roaring Gimlet because of the cold south-westerly winds through the gimlet trees. During the 1890s, Goongarrie was known as Ninety Mile, boasting hotels, bed and breakfasts, a Cobb & Co coach stop, a railway and several shops. Now, three remaining historic railway cottages are part of the Golden Quest Heritage Trail.

  • Always carry plenty of water, enough spares, fuel and other gear.

Please leave your dog at home. 1080 baits used to control feral animals may kill pets.

Getting there

Goongarrie Homestead lies about 90km north of Kalgoorlie and the national park is a further 10km. The homestead is 14km west of the Goldfields Highway on a dirt road turning off near the Goongarrie railway cottages, or there is access from the north of the old Comet Vale siding following the main track for seven kilometres. Access east to the Goongarrie National Park is via Pianto Road, approximately 12km north of the homestead turn-off.
