Description

Wairua Falls is a stunning waterfall located on the Wairua River, just a 30-minute drive from Whangarei in Titoki, New Zealand.

The waterfall is usually almost without water, but during the rainy season, it transforms into a magnificent sight. The falls are only at full throttle after significant rain, as some of the flowing water was diverted in 1915 by the owners of nearby Portland.

The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery, including low-land forest that includes kanuka, kawakawa, kowhai, and titoki. The area is a natural habitat for a variety of bird species, including the North Island fantail, grey warbler, and tui. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful walk through the forest, listening to the sounds of the birds and the rushing water of the falls.

The Wairua River runs from the junction of the Waiotu/Whakapara rivers north of Whangarei to Titoki, some 26km west of Whangarei. The river is also a popular spot for freshwater fishing, with anglers often catching trout and eels. Access to the river can be found at various points along the riverbank, making it easy for visitors to find a spot to cast their line.

Wairua Falls is not only a beautiful natural attraction but also holds great cultural and spiritual significance for all New Zealanders. Te Ara Wairua, which means spiritual pathway, winds its way up both sides of the Wairua River, leading to the falls. The area is a place of great cultural, spiritual, and natural significance, and visitors are encouraged to respect and appreciate the area's cultural heritage.
