Description

Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately owned zoo located near Kamo, Whangarei, New Zealand.

The facility houses a collection of two species of large cats and was formerly used as a location for the filming of the television series The Lion Man. The sanctuary is situated on 80 acres of land and is home to 15 big cats. The primary purpose of the sanctuary is big cat conservation.

Visitors to Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary can expect a unique experience that is different from a traditional zoo. The animals are not kept in cages, but instead, they are allowed to roam free in large enclosures that mimic their natural habitats. This allows visitors to see the animals in a more natural setting and observe their behavior in a way that is not possible in a traditional zoo. The sanctuary offers a range of activities for visitors, including guided tours, animal encounters, and a day cruise to a nearby wildlife sanctuary island. Visitors can also enjoy a picnic in the park or relax in the sanctuary's cafe, which serves a range of food and drinks.

Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary has faced some challenges in recent years. In 2014, the Ministry of Primary Industries ordered the zoo to close to the public until the enclosures were upgraded to meet containment requirements. The sanctuary was forced into liquidation in 2023, leaving the future of the animals uncertain. Despite these challenges, the sanctuary remains committed to its mission of big cat conservation. Overall, Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors. With its focus on big cat conservation and its commitment to providing a natural habitat for its animals, the sanctuary is a must-visit destination for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.
