Description

Darlington Vineyard is a stone’s throw from the sheltered waters of Prosser Bay.

Personal attention is given to each vine by hand-picking and keeping low cropping rates to ensure small berries and intense flavours. The vines at Darlington were planted during the early years of the 1990’s. There are now about 5000 vines of four varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. These 30-year-old vines are now mature and produce between 7 and 10 tonnes of fruit per year. The aspect of the rows is north east on a sloping block, which allows the cool air to drain out the bottom of the vineyard and emolliate the effects of frost. The sunny east coast summer ripens the fruit and picking is usually done during the month of April. The seaside town of Orford is a 1 hour and 15-minute drive north east of Hobart along the Tasman Highway. The town sits under the Thumbs Mountains on Tasmania’s Freycinet Coast. Orford was first settled in 1825 as a way station for convicts. The convicts were marched here before being sent to the penal colony at Darlington on Maria Island. Remnants of this convict history remain.
