Description

The Railway Reserve Heritage Trail, also known as Rail Reserve Heritage Trail or Rail Reserves Historical Trail, is a significant shared pathway in Western Australia.

It stretches between Bellevue and Wooroloo within the Shire of Mundaring. The Trail Loop, which is 40.8 km long, follows the two Eastern Railway routes that form a loop between Bellevue and Mount Helena. The southern route, opened in 1884, passes through Mundaring, while the northern route, opened in 1896, goes through John Forrest National Park.

Continuing from Mount Helena, the Railway Reserve Heritage Trail extends as the Eastern Extension for 22.5 km, forming part of the 75-kilometre-long Kep Track that leads up to Northam.

The trail has a rich history and heritage. It was created after the Western Australian Government Railways ceased operating on the Bellevue to Northam railway in 1966. The Mundaring Council was given the lands of the first two Eastern Railway formations, and although some alterations have been made to the original railway formations, some roads named "Railway Terrace" and other old roads running parallel to the reserve remain unchanged.

The Railway Reserve Heritage Trail passes through various named parks and reserves, including Greenmount National Park, John Forrest National Park, and Leschenaultia Conservation Reserve. Every September, the Shire of Mundaring organizes an event called Trek the Trail, where participants can enjoy art, entertainment, local history, activities, and the physical challenge of the trail.

The trail is used by walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. The Department for Planning and Infrastructure proposes a cycling route that utilizes parts of the trail. There are maps, terrain profiles, and historical information available for
