Description

The Moe to Yallourn Rail Trail is an 8 km track that follows the path of the former railway line that serviced the Yallourn Power Station.

The railway was built in the 1950s to replace the original branch line, which joined the main line between Morwell and Moe. The new branch line was closed in 1986 as briquette production was moved to Morwell.

The trail passes through open countryside and bushy areas, with stunning views of Lake Narracan, the Haunted Hills, and Yallourn W Power Station. The trail crosses Narracan Creek, and passes the Moe Botanic Gardens. Access ramps from the trail provide entry to the gardens and the creek. The route also passes through Newborough.

A detour at Sullivans Track to Lake Narracan is well worthwhile, as it offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy a picnic or BBQ lunch, or even take a swim.

The trail terminates at John Field Drive near the Yallourn Power Station. It is an excellent choice for family day trips around Lake Narracan and can also be combined with a scenic drive past the power station and open-cut mines.

The trail's length is 8 km one way, and it takes approximately 2-3 hours to complete. The surface is a smooth gravel suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. The trail is considered moderate, making it ideal for those who have moderate fitness levels. The trail is open year-round, and visitors are welcome at any time.

The trailhead is located on Bennett Street, Moe 3825.

The Moe to Yallourn Rail Trail is dog-friendly, with dogs allowed on a leash. Visitors can enjoy mountain biking,
