Description

Lady Elliot Island, located off the coast of Queensland, is a popular destination for travelers looking to explore the Great Barrier Reef.

One of the best spots to experience the rich marine life is Spiders Ledge, a remarkable site that offers visitors an unforgettable experience.

The reef at Spiders Ledge slopes from 8 meters to 25 meters and is cut by several gutters and ledges. Divers will witness spectacular and colorful corals, a variety of reef fish, schools of pelagic fish, and turtles. But the highlight of the area is the diverse number of sharks that can be seen here.

This area is well known for sharks, and visitors can spot resting tassel wobbegongs, leopard sharks, as well as whitetip reef and grey reef sharks. These sharks can often be seen patrolling the reef's edge, and visitors can get a rare chance to see larger blacktip sharks and bull sharks.

In the shallows behind Spiders Ledge is an area of dead coral, with lots of caves and gutters. This area is also popular among visitors to see whitetip reef sharks and tawny nurse sharks taking a relaxing nap.

The best period to visit Lady Elliot Island is from November to February when the water is warm, which makes it ideal for diving and snorkeling. In addition, spawning season for corals and a peak time for manta rays is observed during this period.

The Lady Elliot Island Resort manages the only runway on the island, which accommodates 30-seater planes. These return flights run daily from the mainland, and the resort offers packages specific to the flight schedules. Visitors can also take a scenic flight from the mainland to the island, which is an experience in itself.
