Description

The Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts is a museum library in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

It is managed by Libraries Tasmania and is housed in the State Library of Tasmania building. It represents one of the largest collections of colonial and pre-colonial life in Tasmania and also contains... The Allport family settled in Tasmania in 1831. A distinguished family of British barristers whose family seat is Cedar Court in Aldridge is now a Grade I listed house. Joseph Allport was born the youngest son of William Allport and his wife Hannah Curzon in their second marriage. From home, Hannah ran a school where John Glover was a drawing teacher. In 1831 Joseph Allport emigrated to Tasmania and settled in Broadmarsh, Tasmania. His last male descendant, Henry Allport, died in 1965, leaving the family home at Cedar Court, Sandy Bay, his and his family's extensive personal collections, and an endowment for the continued growth of the collection and the establishment of a library. In 1972 the collection was moved to a controlled environment storage facility in the 11-story tower of the State Library of Tasmania. It was officially opened on October 27, 1972 by Lady Alexandra Hasluck, wife of the Governor General.
