Description

Experience the perfect combination of a challenging hike and scenic views at Yacaaba Headland Walking Track in Hawks Nest.

Situated in the southern part of Myall Lakes National Park, this lightly challenging walk takes you up and across the northern headland of Port Stephens. The hike is approximately 6.4 km return, and suitable for moderately fit walkers.

The hike starts at the southern end of Bennetts Beach and takes you through different types of vegetation. You'll first encounter smooth barked angophoras which give way to gnarly banksias and grass trees as you get higher. As the track goes north, you'll catch your breath and appreciate the stunning views up the coastline. On clear days, you can see the blue ridgeline of Barrington Tops from afar.

As you proceed further along the track, it will get rockier and steeper. At the forested ridge top, you'll be treated to coastal views of Seal Rocks and Tomaree Headland. From the headland, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the bushland meeting the coast. Further out to sea, Cabbage Tree Island (also known as John Gould Nature Reserve) protects the only known breeding colony of one of the world’s rarest birds, the Gould’s petrel.

Yacaaba Headland Walking Track is open all year round. The best time to visit for hikers is in spring or autumn, when the temperature is milder, and the flowers are in bloom.
