Description

Kardinia Park is a popular public park in South Geelong, Victoria.

It offers a range of facilities including a football stadium, cricket field, swimming pool, multi-purpose courts, sporting clubrooms, and a senior citizens center. The park has a rich history, dating back to 1872 when it was proclaimed a public park. It was originally called Chilwell Flat and has since evolved into a vital recreation hub for the city of Geelong.

One unique attraction that once stood in Kardinia Park was a zoo that opened in 1903. The park committee managed the zoo, which operated until World War II. The zoo housed various exotic animals, including monkeys, kangaroos, and lemurs from Madagascar.

Kardinia Park also has a significant football history, with the Geelong Football Club playing its home games here since 1941. The park has two football ovals, one used by the Geelong Football Club and the other by the St. Marys football club for community league competitions. The park also has a cricket ground, which is used by the Geelong Cricket Club during the summer seasons.

The park is also home to a swimming pool complex, which opened in the mid-1960s. Operated by the City of Greater Geelong, the complex includes pools for toddlers and older children, lap pools, a diving pool, and a waterslide. The pool hosts swimming competitions throughout the year and has undergone upgrades, including the addition of a new 50-meter pool.

Kardinia Park has also hosted rugby and netball events, including a Super Rugby game in 2012. The park has a clubroom beside the netball courts and offers fitness and playground areas for visitors.
