Description

Located in southern Victoria, Australia, Western Port is a vast tidal bay known for its geographic and historical significance.

It is the second-largest bay in the state and is surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Western Port is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including migratory birds, whales, dolphins, and Australian fur seals. It is listed as a wetland of international significance under the Ramsar Convention.

The area around Western Port, including Phillip Island and French Island, was once inhabited by the Boonwurrung nation. European settlement began in the late 18th century, with George Bass discovering Western Port Bay during an expedition. Seal hunting took place in the 19th century, and the British Government established a settlement in 1826. The first permanent European settlement was established in 1835.

Western Port was once a significant river drainage system but is now a large tidal bay. It covers an area of 680 km², with 270 km² forming mudflats during low tide. The bay is dominated by two large islands, French Island and Phillip Island. The northern shore is an agricultural zone, and the bay is known for its seismically active faults. Boating, pleasure activities, and military, shipping, and oil production facilities operate in the area.

Western Port Bay is home to a diverse range of marine and land fauna and flora. It is surrounded by seven seismically active faults and experiences minor earthquakes. The bay is under strict protection, with several national parks and nature reserves established to preserve the natural habitat.
