Description

Dragon Tree Soak Nature Reserve is located in the southern part of the Kimberley region of Western Australia, in the heart of the Great Sandy Desert.

The reserve covers 180 square kilometers and is situated 210 kilometers east of the Great Northern Highway. It is a secluded reserve, far from any known or named tracks.

Dragon Tree Soak is an important wetland that supports plants and animals that are absent or scarce elsewhere in the desert. The reserve features bullrush Typha domingensis and dragon tree Sesbania formosa, a freshwater spring, a permanent freshwater marsh, and peatland. The swamp is known to house unique fauna like the Clamorous Reed-Warbler and the Australian crake, which are not recorded elsewhere in the region.

Dragon Tree Soak is a wetland of significance due to its ecological values, and its protection is of utmost importance. Dragon Tree Soak is accessible by four-wheel-drive vehicles only. Visitors need to be self-sufficient as the reserve has no facilities available. The swamp makes for a unique and worthwhile side trip for those exploring the Kimberley region.
