Description

Baltzer Lookout and Hanging Rock are two beautiful sights in the Blue Mountains National Park.

This guide provides information on how to get there, what to expect, and when to go.

To reach Hanging Rock and the Baltzer Lookout, turn into Ridgewell Road from the Great Western Highway in the Blue Mountains. The road is unsealed, so caution is advised. The Burramoko Fire Trail, which starts at a small car park, leads to the lookout and Hanging Rock.

The walking track to the Baltzer Lookout and Hanging Rock is a 4 km long management trail. It is mostly flat and not difficult, but proper hiking shoes are recommended. The fire trail is popular with bushwalkers, runners, and cyclists. The destination itself is awe-inspiring.

The Baltzer Lookout offers captivating views of the Grose Canyon and the Blue Mountains region. It was named after William Julius Baltzer, a conservationist who worked towards the establishment of the Blue Mountains National Park. From the lookout, other landmarks such as the Walls Lookout and Bald Head can be seen.

Hanging Rock is not immediately visible from the Baltzer Lookout. To reach it, walk towards the left and follow the downhill path. Although the stretch is short, it is steep and requires negotiating rocks and boulders. Caution is advised to stay focused on the trail.

Hanging Rock and the Baltzer Lookout offer a unique and isolated experience in the Blue Mountains. The area is unfenced, adding to its beauty but also making exploration riskier. Visitors should stay away from cliff edges and avoid walking to the tip of Hanging Rock. It is recommended to inform others about your plans if visiting alone.
