Description

Stringybark Historical Reserve Archerton is a must-visit destination for those interested in the legacy of the infamous Kelly Gang, and it is also a breathtaking natural environment that boasts the unique flora and fauna of the region.

The reserve is located 50 kilometers south from Benalla, and it is accessible through a partially sealed road, which becomes gravel upon entering the State Forest. Take caution while driving as logging trucks use this road frequently. You can reach the day visitor area where you will find picnic and barbeque facilities by following the Stringybark Creek Road.

Stringybark Historical Reserve Archerton was the location of the memorable shootout between the Kelly Gang and police on 26 October 1878, which resulted in the deaths of three policemen. The reserve has a police memorial that is dedicated to the fallen officers. Additionally, there is a historical walk around the reserve where visitors can learn more about the events.

While at the reserve, make sure to take the 1.4 km walking track named Stringybark Creek Walk. It will take you around 30 minutes to complete the walk. The track is through a natural bush setting, where you can enjoy amazing views of the area's natural beauty.
