Wineries in Leeton Region

The Leeton region is part of the broader Riverina wine region in the south-west plains of New South Wales, centered on Griffith. Characterized by flat plains and a warm Mediterranean climate, the region's red-brown earth soil with limestone rubble is ideal for grape cultivation, especially for Shiraz, Chardonnay, and the notable Bortytis Semillon. Durif is also a key grape variety grown in the area, contributing to the diverse wine production.

In recent years, Mediterranean varieties like Montepulciano and Pinot Grigio have become popular in the region due to their adaptability to the local climate. The Riverina region is the largest wine-producing area in New South Wales and the second-largest in Australia, with a significant annual fruit intake and a wide range of grape varieties cultivated across hectares of land. It exports millions of cases of wine globally each year, highlighting its importance in the international wine market.

The region's wine history dates back to 1913 with plantings by JJ McWilliam, and the influence of Italian immigrants after the world wars played a crucial role in developing the wine industry by producing wines reminiscent of their homeland. Today, the area continues to be a key player in the Australian wine scene, offering a rich variety of grape types and wine styles.
