From rich history to white, sandy beaches perfect for whale watching, Albany is a prime southwest destination. Despite this coastal town being a popular spot for tourists and Perth locals alike, many will not know of Albany’s hidden jewel, Darrel Radcliffe and his unique art. Specialising in abstract art, Darrel uses a chainsaw and old tree stumps as his canvas to create spectacular sculptures and artworks.

“My sculptures have expression and often tell a story”
The sculptures are a representation of Darrel’s enjoyment of life, with most based on nature and human spirit. The spectacular carvings hold so much detail that it is almost impossible to believe they were produced with a tool as large and cumbersome as a chainsaw.

Darrell was inspired to pick up a chainsaw after seeing the technique used overseas. What started off as a hobby soon developed into a deeper obsession for the creative art form.
Darrell has gone on to win numerous prizes from his sculptures, including the Plantagenet Art Prize, York Show, Albany Show, Denmark Fine Wood Competition and Porongurup Art in the Park show.

For those wanting to witness these unique sculptures in person, Darrel has opened a discovery drive that winds through his very own Albany property. The drive allows you to experience all of his creations in a natural bush setting. A donation of $5 on entry is appreciated and goes towards the costs of creating and maintaining the art drive.
Darrel has shared with us a special preview of his latest masterpiece, a violin sinking into a jarrah log carved from a single piece of wood.
