A heritage-listed property was subdivided to make way for this enchanting two-storey home in Fremantle’s east end.

An eye for design in marrying old with new ensures that this home best compliments the enclave of existing buildings around it.

The use of limestone plinth blocks to the external walls, ornate detailing to the feature window sills, and corbelled arch headers sets the scene for a warm and homely interior.

The cottage form of the building incorporates a clever ground-floor layout with a small studio, living room, kitchen and dining area, formal entry, and north-facing private courtyard with a built-in barbecue. The grand entrance, featuring travertine flooring, links to the upper floor via an elegant staircase, and offers visual connection to the living room through glazed doors. This leads through to the designer kitchen, adorned with a stylish island bench dressed in Caesarstone, classical off-white paneled cabinetry, and Bosch stainless steel appliances. A scullery flows on from the kitchen, providing further space for food preparation and storage.

Continuing this neutral palette, painted timber French doors open out to the courtyard to establish a timeless aesthetic reminiscent of the federation era. French doors also make an appearance in the dining room, used on each side to ensure efficient breeze paths for summer cooling. The dining room also has direct access to an underground wine cellar.

On the upper floor, the library features a fireplace and a wall of built-in bookshelves, which carry over the door for added drama. French doors lead onto a romantic Juliet balcony overlooking the harbour. The master bedroom is complete with a generous dressing room, and luxuriously appointed ensuite bathroom with honed marble tiles, frameless shower screens and vanity benchtops.
