Observatories in The Kimberley

The Broome Bird Observatory, situated 24 km from Broome in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, serves as an educational, scientific, and recreational hub. It provides accommodation, birdwatching opportunities, tours, courses, and research facilities, catering to both visitors and ornithological expeditions. The Clive Minton Discovery Centre, named after a renowned wader researcher, was established in 2021, offering a wealth of resources. Travelers are advised to avoid Google Maps directions and instead take the right turn onto Crab Creek Road when journeying from Broome.

Despite not being in the Kimberley region, the Perth Observatory holds significant astronomical importance in Western Australia. Located in Bickley, 40 minutes east of Perth, this observatory boasts a rich history of over 125 years. Visitors can partake in night tours to observe the Southern Hemisphere's celestial wonders through the facility's telescopes. The on-site museum showcases historical instruments, meteorite displays, astrophotographs, artwork, and the Atlas Coelestis, the first-ever printed star atlas from 1729. Night tours are available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, with additional tours on Thursday nights during school holidays.
